I need help with a little problem, first off im on dail up which does me for what i need. My laptop is a HP pavilion zd7000 and when i dial in things are fine but say after around 60 second the line drops. I don't mean i lose the connection it stays active but i get offline messages in IE and any other programs be it ad ware or spy doctor. I have run DU meter and it shows that im not downloading anything, i'm uploading and downloading at 0 k I cant fingure it out. I've all seting in my internet options set up right but it still will die after a minute. If im downloading something it may stay working but as soon as the file is done its dead again. Could anyone offer any insight for me short of reformating??

And its not the phone line my other laptop works fine, also when i do use braodband i don't have any hassle its just on Dial up. Also it might be something or nothing but the mother board in this machine brunt out and was replaced by HP and this problem has only raised its head when i got back my laptop with its new motherboard and hard disk

It could be a number of things, i wouldnt think its a hardware problem as its usually a modem does or doesn't work, there's no grey area where it works some of the time, in my experience anyway, if you've no important info re-format, its the easiest way probably, but wait to see what the other suggestions are :)

Havent used dialup in a while...but a ditinct memory of things trying to hack into my computer comes to ming.

With BB you could almost not use a firewall(router port blocking) but the same is certainly not true for a DialUp connection.

A good Firewall might solve your problem.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

Check Control Panel - Modem - Properties - Connection -"Disconnect if idle" time

Did you get a driver cd with your new motherboard? I'd reinstall the drivers before even thinking about re-formating

i'm not too sure if he has checked the idle disconnect setting in control panel, must say that to him when i see him later on, sounds like that could be the problem alright as when he connects to my network on broadband there is no problems, just when he tries dial up.

he reformated about 2 weeks ago due to this problem + virus and the problem remained so will check out the idles disconnect settings later on, also the windows firewall is off and he does'nt have any other firewall on the machine *cough*idiot*cough* ;) will get him to do a windows update when he gets here two coz he aint got any of the security patches since SP2.

Have seen the problem and its weird his laptop even on a broadband network has the same problem maybe after 20 mins. Can't ping a site or trace a route, none of the applications that require a net connection will connect.

So we know one thing its not a modem problem
