Overtime and work time regulations.

    A friend of mine works in the retail sector, his usual hours are 9am-6pm mon-fri, have been for a long time. The shop has a special event coming up and have told him he is working afternoon to late night at his normal pay rate.
    Is he entitled to increased overtime pay or any other extra compensation or can he legally tell them to f-off?

    It depends on his contract. If it says that he is expected to work hours other than 9 - 6 at the normal rate of pay then there's not much that he can do about it.

    if he doesnt work more than 37 hours i dont think hes entitled to extra pay. Only exception is sunday. Normally in retail contracs it states somewhere that hours are subject to change to suit the needs of the business. This is to cover them if they need to open longer for sales etc.

    If it's simply a shift of his hours I doubt he's entitled to anything else (ie afternoon to late night as opposed to morning to evening). As ajmurphy62 said, most retail contracts have the "hours change to suit the business" yokey.
