Does anyone know of any piece of software that can be installed on a machine that will block access to chat rooms. Preferably free ;) rather than using surfcontrol, netnanny, etc or messing around with the security settings of ie. Its for libraries (hence the free part), checked google but they all seem to be chargable.

If they're going through a proxy you can block them at that level. Most proxies - IIS and Apache - have a facility to block sites. Alternatively you can put a hosts file on each machine pointing the urls to the chat sites at fake ip addresses. Obviously this solution is a lot more maintenance.
