PC cooling

I'm not referring to fancy cooling kits, but something that i have always done with my old PC. From changing different PCI cards around, i have often left 2 or 3 pci covers out when the slots are not in use if you know what i mean.

My question is whether this would be a help or a hinderence to a PC's cooling. A bit like having the windows down while having the A/C on in a car maybe?

it wouldn't really make a difference. the fan will keep it cool.

Leave the slots covered from now on, it will stop dust from getting in.

I'd say it would be a hinderance. Especially if you have a fan sucking air in at the bottom front of the case. The air would just blow right through instead of forcing up through the case.
