Nokia infrared compatibility

    Hi All,
I've noticed this a good while back, but never knew why. Every time I try to send something like an image via infrared on a handset like the Nokia 6230 to a handset like the Nokia 6100 or the 6610i, (and vice-versa) it always fails. Why does this incompatibility exist? (or am I doing something wrong?)

    Cheers,

    DC.

AFAIK, Nokia have limted what you can do with infrared for some reason. The only thing you can send using IR is business cards and the like. If you want to transfer an image or ringtone, you have to do it via Nokia PC Suite, in which case you need a infrared capable PC or laptop...at which stage you probably say 'feck it, it's not worth the hassle'. :D

    Annoying isn't it?

    Hi,

If the image or music (midi, etc) is something you've purchased/downloaded then it's likely to have forward-locking DRM which means you cannot send it to anyone.

If the image, etc is something you created or put on the phone yourself, it should be okay to send it via infrared or bluetooth :)

    Thanks for the replies people.
I don't think the images I was trying to send had forward locking. (I was able to send them via bluetooth to another handset)

    It's very annoying really.

    Thanks,

    DC.

Ps. if you do go the PC route...
don't get the special Nokia "data link" cables.. they're a complete rip off at around €60 or more.
I got a universal USB infrared device ( think it needed FIR and SIR )
fast and slow infrared. It was only €15 on a uk site.

    regards,
    Owen

I have IR images and ringtones and movie clips to other Nokia phones on many occasions. So see no problem there. ;)

The problem seems to match up to fact that different Nokia handsets require different data cables. For example, both the Nokia 6610 and the Nokia 6230 are both pop-port, but they require different data cables and the IR does not work between them.
On the other hand, both the 6230 and 6650 use the same data cable (DKU-2) and IR does work between them IIRC.

Well I had a 6100 which couldn't do it. It would only accept business cards via IR. Maybe they lifted the restriction on certain models...
