except that the D70 is two years newer than the by now aged D100.

Full comparison is here - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/page20.asp

The D100 has some bits & pieces over the D70 but I dont know if it's enough to sway me into buying a 3 year old camera.... unless of course theyre going cheap :)

D70, no contest. It blew the D100 out of the market by offering a near-identical spec with newer technology for a better price. Have a look at the few extras the D100 offers and ask yourself if any of them are vital to your taking the type of pictures you want.

I say this as a recent D70 owner who went through all these issues and considered lots of alternatives including the Canon 350D, the Pentax and Olympus alternatives. Having opted for the D70, I'm certain I made the right decision.

You could also look as the new D70s. I'm not sure how much of a jump it is over the current model though. Probably just slightly better in a few ways and just as good in the rest. I've been put off Nikon from what I've heard from a few professionals, lots making the move to Canon.

the canon 300d, 350D and 20D all have featuress similar to the D70

if you're spending that much money on a camera, you should be reading the reviews on dpreview.com photo.net etc rather than relying on a couples of peoples opinions here
