I got one of the Dell Poweredges that was on offer as mentioned here. Cna anyone tell me the type of memory that it needs. There appears to be some slight confusion. Also any hints as to the cheapest place for it? I've checked out Crucial and they seem a tad expensive.

240-pin DIMM DDR2 ECC Sticks, server ram is slightly dearer, expect to pay around 200 quid a gig

This stuff needs to be paired too?

Not 100% sure, 200quid would get you a 1gb stick, im sure 512 sticks are as cheap as 70-80 euro.

So maybe go with 2 sticks of 512?

If you are unsure on what ram to get, use the crucial memory selector

This system will work with ECC or non ECC DDR2. It does not support registered DDR2.
I've got 1GB of PC2-4300 non ECC running in mine right now ;)

I got 2 512MB sticks for mine, €161 in total inc delivery from crucial.

I just bought 500MB from PC-Memory-Upgrade.co.uk for €80 .. was tempted to go for one GB of non-ECC .. but then I would have had to get rid of the installed 256MB ECC...

    Swings and roundabouts..

Hey G'vork - you put a PCie x16 GFX card in yours or are you using up a standard PCI slot?

Trying to find a decent "compatible" PCie card that doesnt cost as much as the server!

As far as I know there is no "compatible" PCIe cards for the slot in question. You will need to either hack the non standard PCIe 8x slot on the motherboard or hack the GFX card. Either way you'll end up with a PCIe GFX card running @ 8x speed because the pins don't go beyond the 8x area of the slot.
All the info needed to mod the slot can be found here and here

    That's strange. XPSP2 installed without a hitch.
DO NOT use the installation disk that comes with it. That will probably expect(want) to install a server OS..

I meant that will work after the slot has been hacked... what kind of card are you using? They all talk about the ATI x700 pro at €250

I don't have the slot modded yet. I did however mod the slot on my SC1420 and stuck in an nVidia 6600 256meg and it's quite happy. Might do the same with this although I'd like to use an x800xt or similar but I'm not sure it the PSU in the 420 could handle the extra power requirements :(
I'll keep you posted though ;)
