New one on me...

On tonight's WPT show on Challenge, there was 2 players in a hand. One was all-in. One showed 98o, the other Q9o. Board came 2JJK. The guy commentating said something along the lines of: "if a 2 or a 9 comes up, there will be a split pot. Both will have 2 pair with a K kicker".

That sounds like total BS to me. The kicker can come from the board? Surely if a 2 or 9 came up, the guy with the Q kicker would win? I asked a question here a little while ago about a split pot in a tourney I was playing in that I couldn't understand. Perhaps this is the reason, perhaps there was 2 pair and the kicker on the board.

Does this apply to anything else? What about one pair with a kicker on the board?

It just seemed like a strange thing to say if it wasn't true, but I've never come across the situation before.

he is right. They would both be playing the board.

i'm going to explain this the best i can without sounding patronizing.

A holdem hand consists of any five cards from seven cards: 5 on the board and 2 in your hand.

This hand can consist of just one, both, or neither of your hole cards.

This should explain things for you.

In NL Texas Hold'em you play the best 5 card hand out of the seven availible to you.

If the best hand between 2 players is the board then it is a split pot.

You have to fold the flop but the mistake was not reraising preflop

    Ah, you failed ;)

I never even considered the kicker to be a part of the hand, as such, and so included in the "any five cards" configuration. I've always thoughts of the kicker as the tie-breaker, and therefore you have to "own" it.

Of course, it makes complete sense that the kicker is a part of the hand and therefore can come from the hole or from the board. Hmmm, wonder how many home game hands have been screwed up because of this. Probably none, it's got to be quite a rare occurence.

Just to answer my own question then:

I guess it would be pair with 3 kickers and if the 3 best cards are on the board, both players would pick them. Woah, pretty deep :p

Hmm I wonder, if there was a straight on the board that means it's split if neither playing can get a higher straight? I always assumed that the playing holding the higher cards would take the pot even if what he was holding didn't figure in the straight :S

Nope. Best five cards regardless. If the board is the nuts then its split.

Unless of course you're an Irish Rugby International playing in the Irish Open (2K entry fee). Boards cards are four of a kind (we'll say JJJJ) with an A. One player goes all in for the crack. Irish Rugby International folds :)

Ah crap. I was watching your table for a few minutes and i seen you lost an all in race for about 2200. His 2200 v your higher cards and you were on about 4300 a the time.
I was playing a good value 1k guarenteed freezout round about the same time. $20 buyin with only 18 runners 5 places paid. I came 3rd for €150. It was the most tense final table i ever played. 2 monster stacks v me and 2 other similar small stacks. Everyone was keeping out of eachothers way to a ridiculous extent. With 5 left and folded around to monster stack in sb with small stack in bb the monster stack didnt complete several times. When the 2 other small stacks were busted out i folded my tent and went for it.

Nice one. Can't remember the last time I cashed in a MTT online. Thankfully I'm winning a bit on the cash tables.
