Considering they have to police the web areas to some extent it's a good idea.

Plus it would allow Cloud to easily do a filesize check and just tell the page to ignore showing it if the file is over a certain size?

Also rather then avatar.gif, select a format that doesn't allow animation.

Prolly a lot of work though.

I couldn't be bothered going in to people's profiles, and I'd imagine those who want an avatar will soon reset their own.

    You're missing my point.

The avatar is not an issue. I don’t care if admins/mods have custom ones or not. The issue is that it was publicly available, picked by a member and then taken away for apparently no good reason.

The question is one of accountability. Ownership is a factor, but it would not bode well to the spirit of the community that it claims to foster, if one can exercise one’s powers with personal and not community interests in mind, without any recourse for the little ppl.

Apols if this seems adversarial (I don’t mean to be), but I’m as much try to understand the nature of this community as anything else.

The avatar was on a list of available avatars so at most we have similar tastes, and no I am and was not interested in stealing it (and you know I could, and then you'd counteract that, so on and on - pointless).

As I asked is Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

If the answer is ‘no one’ or otherwise, then I’ll have what I’m looking for. Not the avatar.

    Hey ****,

To be fair, we watch the community, and they watch us. We police and choose how the boards are run, but there's the countercheck of the community itself.

In a couple of cases, we've made changes or done things that weren't popular with the users of the boards, and we've corrected those changes accordingly. The boards only exist because of the people here, and when a large enough group of the users complain or suggest changes, we listen smile.gif

So who watches us? We all do!

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> As I asked is Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? </font>

    What Regi says.

Also, Moderators are not untouchables. We've had one mod be removed from being a moderator and subsequently banned from the boards entirely.

Admins pay for the site and are directors of the holding company but there are only 5 of them (Cloud, DeVore, Regi, Vexorg and Tr1n1ty). All 5 have shown dedication to maintaining the community the people here want.

Remember we were members of this community before we became owners of Boards.ie

As you and I well know communities which someone trys to control, get up and leave.

They vote with their feet, thats the cool thing. So, pretty much anything goes here so long as its legal, consensual, and not stopping others from posting what THEY want to post too.

Having multiple accounts is a no no though.

    DeVore.

Sorry, the other account is an old one that I only used once or twice. I'd delete it if I could.

I wanted to start afresh and see what community (that's plugged at every opportunity wink.gif) was about, and to see if I could (time allowing) be a part of it.

As for who I am is hardly a secret as I've told various ppl, including Regi, what name I was going by.

I'd have told you personally too if I'd had a chance frown.gif

    Ha ha **** :-)

So you are The Corinthian - after the Sandman dude no doubt? Or maybe not... I had a Quake clanmate who had the name a while back so the name stuck in my mind (you may see old posts from "Corinthian" in the archives).

Well, funnily enough I noticed your Berg Katse avatar yesterday just after I added the code to stop people stealing my one, but them's the breaks... But if you are a true Battle of the Planets fan, there are a number of other G-Force avatars there (but Zoltar is a no-no). You can also visit my new website at http://www.battleoftheplanets.net/

I see you did have the avatar quite early on (by searching for THe Corinthian posts) but unfortunately I did not notice that when DeV asked me if the Zoltar one could be his custom one. We are only allowing administrators custom avatars from now because moderators come and go sometimes.

    See you!

Well, this admin board is open to anyone to complain on. As you can see from the posts here.

People sometimes rant at us (which is not a good idea for actually getting something about your problem *done*)

Often we change what we are doing by taking feedback from the community...

Look at how we approached cleaning up the CS forum (which has been much better since then too). Its community driven and evolved.

They decide the laws... I'm just the cop on the beat.

I'll cut something much much much sooner from Humanities then from CS too...

its very true that the admins listen to the masses. ive had a few (although small) issues with the boards, and the admins sort them out quickly. ive seen it even more with other users since the admin board appeared.

I think it's more along the lines of "Who is the keeper of the kept?" - i.e.: "who is (/are) the administrator(s)?"

****, just read your post again.

I didnt honestly think you were trying to steal my avatar. That was a sly dig at your poor impulse control and poorer choice of friends. smile.gif But lets leave that to email...

I never realised anyone was using that avatar, I asked Cloud to make it custom (actually it was when I was being Evil-DeVore just after the Glenstal school thing...)

That would have denied it to you. Presumably you got around it until yesterday when we had a problem with external gifs being linked in and put in code to stop it. It also stopped you (presumeably.... I hadnt noticed anyone using it ever tbh!)

I dont really care about avatars but I've found myself identifying people by them alright. It takes a fair bit of work to lock off an avatar so we decided not to do it for everyone as the limited resource we call "time" could be spent on better things for the community.

However, since there were only 5 admins, we decided to treat ourselves and lock off our avatars... If you really want Zoltan, I dont honestly mind you having him!

Now, does that answer your questions?

/me wonders if the people who run Ireland.com and Gov.ie sites (up against us for community site of the year awards) have these problems....

/me also wonders if the people in charge would answer these questions even if they were posted....

I guess thats what makes us different....

I dunno why this thread just got closed, but I've opened it up to avoid complaints that we would close a thread in order to get the last word...

personally, I think we've answered the questions and the thread is going off topic but people are welcome to reply...

More or less. Comes from a Roman satire about a man afraid to leave his wife alone (for fear she'd cheat on him), and so he has her guarded and is asked by a friend "but who will guard the guardians?"

It's modern usage is more about the question of political accountability.

    btw, I'm the Corinthian here...

Zoltar is the name of your avatar, from Battle of the Planets. Actually I'm surprised Cloud hasn't come around and slapped you for such a display of ignorance of BOTP. smile.gif

So Devore what about SMAK's idea of an avatar.gif with a forced filesize in the hosted areas?

I've not been on Boards long. When I did join I took an avatar from a cartoon that I'd watched as a wee child.

Unfortunately, the same avatar is also the one used by an admin. A week, or less, after I joined, the avatar in question became custom and I began posting broken image links.

I was rather put out by this, so I took it back.

It's gone again, although a referrer check is not much of an obstacle wink.gif, although I’m not overly bothered by it’s loss. However, I do find that in my short time on Boards, this matter is beginning to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Should admin/mods be able to deny an avatar, not because it’s too large or pornographic, but because they want a monopoly on the image for themselves? The issue of avatars is a side one as this could apply to Karma, editing of posts, etc. Is there any recourse for admin/mod accountability?

    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

How about when you scrool through that list of avatars, you see in brackets at the side who is using it atm. I would have no idea how to do this but it would stop the whole, YOU STOLE MY AVATAR thing. Or date the avatar was taken on to show who got their first.
