Why does the search suck so much?

Eh. It stinks, it's really awful.

If you want to search everywhere, you have to sit there, while the page reloads, going through each forum. Come on, that's pathetic!

Takes ages! Obviously developed over a lan and nobody thought how bad it would be if the person was using a dialup.

I dunno how UBB is organised behind the scenes much (other than a whole load of perl cgis) but can't somebody modify the search cgi? I'm willing to do it, if that's any use.

Not to mention that it's a waste of your bandwidth, all those requests.

Phaxx NOT being offensive or anything but do you ever do anything besides complain on these boards ?

What is now was once only imagined.

It has plenty of options and fields for you to narrow your search down, both by forum and by username.

Is that too complicated for you?

    Hehe, I gripe that much?

    Er, it's still awful.

What if you can't remember what forum something was in, or who posted it? Something you glanced at yesterday, but didn't have time to read properly or something.

Anyway, just commenting on how terrible it is. smile.gif

    Laaazy developers, tsk tsk.

its not exactly google, iirc UBB just uses grep or some other brute force method to go through all the html files within a paricular forums directory (and all the directories if no forum is given), theres no searchengine type ranking or retrieval done.

vBB must use some other method then as a search on it is about 80,000 times faster than a uBB.

It's only really the way it wants you to reload the page once for each and every forum it searches that bothered me, it'd be grand if that was fixed. Ah well, it's only the search anyway.

What about setting it up like a search engine that has 'pre-searched' for key words. Which way hogs more server speed?

Kill, kill, kill the laser mice.
