Unknown substance and green way to dump

    Hi,

    I have three 30 L (approx) containers in the garden from when I bought the house but not sure of their contents. One appears to be diesel, another petrol and the last could be petrol and oil combined but not really sure. I am a bit weary of them but am not sure what to do with them. ANybody got suggestions?

    Get a mechanic to see what is capable of re-use, the next part would be to dispose of them which is going to be very expensive, you have two options either contact the local authority to find out costs of disposal for hazardous waste or contact a waste company to do same.

    I would also look at the survey of the property and see if there has been any assessement of the ground where the materials were stored/used. If the there is an exclusion clause with the words 'deliterious materials' combined with 'no assessement of' then you could need to have a specialist survey done. I would consider a non-assessement of such materials to be very poor practice as remediation could be expensive.

    Good luck with your disposal I hope that these materials have been stored securely and that your costs are minimal.

    It all sounds a bit expensive. I want to do the right thing but ultimately cost is going to be a factor. The survey doesn't mention them at all or the grounds in that manner. They were stored down the side of the extension and I am 90% sure it's petrol and or mixtures of. Assuming that is the case what is the green way to get rid of them?

    Reuse as much of it as is possible, from there you are unfortunately into commercial oil waste which is expensive. If your survey has made no mention of the oils or has no exclusion clauses dealing with unknown deliterious materials you are covered as the property has been fully inspected by a competent professional with indemnity insurance.
