File Recovery Software

A hard disk of mine is gone wallop. Files have just vanished from the partition with the operating system.

I had them copied and pasted to another hard drive but did a quick format (format d: /q through DOS) on that drive recently, so I am up **** creek without a paddle.

Is there any proven file recovery software that will help me?

Its a Windows 98 system and reinstalling Windows 98 is simply not an option for a number of reasons.

Try googling for file scavenger ... there's a demo available on their site, but I'm not sure how functional it is, since it's a trial version.
The good thing about it is that it'll let you scan by selecting the physical drive, and not just by partition like some others do.
