    I'd consider these books to be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand physics.

    Be they a physics student, or a lay person.

    I really cannot recommend these books enough. I'm sure they are mentioned in the useful physics books thread above, but I thought that people might be interested in discussing them in a thread :)

    sean_o I know you probably meant well but you can't put links to pdfs of books that are under copyright up on here. That's illegal and essentially such links are links to warez which are not allowed on this site.

    If you do so again I will have to ban you.

    Also, if you're interested, Brian Greenes Elegant Universe (complete 3 hour tv show stream available) Pretty much a cheesy american attempt and absolutely string theory biased but worth the watch...good quality..
