Hi A couple of questions on VPN and Eircom Home starter.(all on windows)

    1) Can you install a vpn server on a machine connected to the net with eircom home starter. (i.e.) does home stater connection meet requirements.

    2) If you cant what connection / requirements do you need to upgrade to.

    3) Is there much work into setting up a vpn server and connecting from a remote client.

    4) If you set up a domain can your remote machine join the domain when the vpn connection is active.

prob more questions to come ........

    1) Yes.
    2) N/A
    3) Shouldn't be. Install the program then forward the ports on your modem to the PC in question.
    4) Don't know for sure but I think so

    Good luck with it

Newer versions of Microsoft ship with built-in vpn software (for either pptp or ipsec vpns) ... not the easiest to setup and maintain though, I use OpenVPN in work here, its a doddle if you know Linux (and it will work on Windows too) plus it uses only one port (as opposed to the half-dozen for MS implementations) so firewall rules are kept to a minimum.

    Like the look of OpenVpn
I think ill give that a go.
From a setup point of view -

I have machine 'A' with 2 network cards.
Card 1 is pludded into the Eircom BB modem
Card 2 is plugged into a switch
The machine will be installed as a domain controller(w2k)
Ill install firewall software on this machine and Open VPn

A file server is plugged into the switch.

All machines join the domain and get to the file server and net by plugging into the switch.

How does this setup sound? I want to keep it as simple as possible and have limited resources.
