Personally I think Karma's a great idea, but it needs to be more visible, like a post count or something. Or even a league table (with just the positive and negative posters)

That way people might take it a lot more seriously.

Plus I think we could link karma to 12-clicking, like the English driving license system. Reach say "-5" Karma and you get an automatic 12-clicking.

That way there's a little more consensus about the 12-click procedure.

Of course I'm saying all this without the slightest clue about how much coding work it'd take or if it's even possible, but hey can't let the Admins start having a RL can we

I don't agree with an automatic 12-click based on Karma. That's taking control out of the admin's hands and putting it into the mod's hands and I don't think that's a good idea...

Someone a mod takes a disliking to then, for whatever reason, would just suddenly *poof* disappear...

It's up to the admins (Cloud, DeVore, Regi, Lucutus, whoever...) to choose who they do and don't want on Boards - mod's should be able to make suggestions (although I'd say do that privately - the "12-CLICK THIS PERSON!" threads are ridiculous).

Good idea Shinji, hopefully stop people posting spam to catch up with Hobbes. I think you could put it into star form. Red stars indicate negative karma, blue stars indicate positive karma, a single green star indicates neutral karma. The more red/blue stars someone gets, the less/more karma they have.

I dont know enough perl to do it tho but I've also been thinking about a board-project to open source the code for boards so we could mess with the code.

It cant be that hard can it?

I reckon it's a really good one - moves the whole focus from boosting post counts to boosting karma.

The open-source one is a good idea in principle, but isn't the core code of boards based off UBB - a commercial product?

hmmm.. you make it sound like I was trying to start a coup d'etat The idea was to cut down on the Admins hassle really. If the boards grow as fast as the are it could become a nightmare. But I see your point.

Thanks for the credit Shinji. Personally I think open source for boards is a really good idea if it can be done, as I've been wanting to get involved in the development of boards (but to shy to ask).
You can download a demo version for experimenting. It's a larg download.

I don't know a lot of perl myself but I have worked with it before. There's enough developers on boards to work it out between us.
