Ugh, this has brought back my headache with a vengence.

First off, this has only happened since today. I've no idea whether its to do with the storms since, but due to my setup and due to the fact everything is plugged in via surge protectors, I doubt it. There was also no electrical activity in Galway that I know off.

    My connection set up thusly:

    DSL Line
    --->Netopia Cayman 3346 Router
    > My Desktop (VIA VT6102 Rhine II)
    > British Telecom Voyager 1500-80 Wireless Router
    > Laptop (wireless)

So basically everything is daisy chained through the Netopia router. The BT wireless router is set to passive passthrough for my laptop alone. I had trouble configuring it all, but got it working in the end.

Since today though, my desktop hasn't been able to pick up any sort of network connection, within either Linux or Windows. Windows reports my ethernet card (built-in on my motherboard) to be working fine, but that a network cable is unplugged.

Linux sets my network, but chokes if I try to connect anywhere:
    bash-2.05b$ ping -c 3 192.168.1.254
    PING 192.268.1.254 (192.168.1.254) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable

    --- 192.168.1.254 ping statistics ---
    3 packets transmitted, 0 received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 1999ms, pipe 3

On the other hand, my laptop's internet connection works perfectly, even though its been daisy chained through the Netopia and British Telecom routers. I've Googled around, but nothing there seems to have covered this.

Not sure if Windows reporting that your network card is working properly can be trusted... I have a Soltek SFF PC and the internal network card is listed as working properly - I can reach my router and all. However, I can't get external traffic from the net, at all, be it with Windows or Fedora Core 4. I've had this for awhile, finally gave up and added an 802.11g USB dongle and it works brilliantly. I'm assuming the internal NIC is somehow messed up, since re-installing various OSs has no effect. Maybe something similar in your case?

Who knows? I was going to pick up a cheap network card tomorrow and see how it goes.

It turns out my on-board ethernet was pooched.

I got a Netgear network card that's fixed my problem from that end. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't seem to be working under Linux.

So that theory panned out - mine seems to be screwed as well. Though for the life of me I still don't get how it can communicate with my router/other PCs but doesn't allow external traffic.

Too bad the NIC you picked up doesn't work under Linux - at this stage you'd think most bog standard NICs would...
