Fighting fire with petrol is not a good idea.

Personally I think O'Driscoll should sue the IRB for letting Umaga and Co get away with it. The tackle was bad enough, the complete abdication of responsibility by the match officials, including the citing commissioner clearly brings the game into disrepute.

Look at the pictures in today's Indo. He is clearly being lifted up, one leg at a time by two Kiwis, despite the fact that the ball has gone.

I know what the Kiwis will say, what they always say, what the horrible little squirt David Kirk said in the Sunday Times yesterday. 'Raising this point is just whinging because you lost. It wasn't important in the context of the game. That's not why the All Blacks won. They played better especially up front.' Most of which is true, but the bigger picture is the behaviour of the game's leading players towards each other.

O'Driscoll could have been crippled for life. To say that it shouldn't matter because his team lost is an insult to everybody's intelligence. People, like myself, who encourage their children to play this game need some reassurance that life-threatening thuggery such as exhibited by Umaga and the other chap, will not be tolerated.

There is already a huge problem in New Zealand with young white boys taking up the game. Year for year, they can't compete physically with the Pacific Islanders who mature physically much earlier than them. To the extent that in many competitions in New Zealand, schoolboys are classified not by age as they are here but by weight. So they're dropping out. Many so-called New Zealanders are in fact islanders.

If rugby is allowed to brutalise itself so that it really becomes the survival of the biggest toughest and most ruthless then those with a choice will choose not to participate. It will become more and more like boxing, where the professional game is ruled by gangsters and populated by the underclass for whom the sport is an alternative to crack addiction or being a pimp.

The game is worth more than that. It's not a whinge to say that Umaga and (wotsname) should be chastised and severely for what they did. It's their own actions that brought it upon them.

    Ban the bastards.

The lion who got cited fro bitting
Has anyone seen this incident? I havent yet. All I can say if some fellas paws "inadvertently" ended up in my mouth at the bottom of the scrum.................................

Its not right to wish harm upon another player fellas even if he is a dirty **** like umanga. Now I know most people will tell me he won an award for sportsman ship and blah blah blah, I dont care about that I care about teh fact that it seems rather obvious that himself and the NZ #2 double teamed O'driscoll off the ball.

As for O'connell hurting Umanga it would only result in o'connell getting cited and banned so it would be pointless.

I do however hope that the lions go into this match charged and get physical and much more creative than they were in the first test match. Hopefully the new line up will help with this. It has been said that the last time the lions won a series after losing their first test was all the way back in 1979(I think around this year anyway) against Austrillia. So they will really be up against it but Im hopeing that the obivous attack on their captin will help them gel as a team and give them the power to beat the All Blacks.

As for the whole Umanga thing it seems he has gotten away with it  Hopefully they will be able to appeal this incident but enfortunatly I dont see it happening :(

People have to move on and forget this incident and this tour. It was a terrible tackle but you have to move on. This is not the first time a player has been picked out for special treatment and it sure as hell wont be the last.

If umanga or McCaw got a well placed boot in the face then there would hardly be a thing said about it here. And just to add to the point Darcy did a spear tackle too and nothing was said about it.

If O'Connell does go out to try and take out Umanga then he would just be as bad as him and if people then congratualte him then, then try are full of **** and can be classed as a hypocritical partisan twats.

Funny that most of us are talking about this as we should be talking about how bad the lions played.

The Lions were outclassed in every department and I cant see a few changes changing the fact that they will get whitewashed in the series 3-0.

IMO the lions are very poor team and woodword has only himself to blame for this debacle one would call a tour.

To be honest the spear tackle put in on Lewsey was far worse than the one that O'Driscoll received as it was from a much bigger height. Umaga was also the culprit.

But all this will do is fire up the Lions and Saturday will be a much more physical encounter, which will only help the Lions as they certainly seemed to be lacking that bit of bite (no pun intended ;) ) up front.

Having seen the still pictures and video of the incident I am now in no doubt that he was singled out.

The All Blacks do not commit players out of position as they man mark so what were 2 players tackling one then ?

It is natural to use 2 arms and wrap around an opponent. Gareth Thomas has said he heard the touch judge (ref in 2nd test) say to them that ball was gone yet they continued to take him out.

The fact that the captain didn't go up to O'Driscoll says a lot about the man - either he was guilty and ashamed or he was seething over O'Driscoll's reaction to the Haka.

I believe that the whole incident is a very sorry affair and I can see tempers boiling over in the 2nd test.

Personally I feel very dissapointed for BOD as the game and test series has been robbed of a true star although I am quite sure that Lions would have got stuffed with or without him.

I wish people would Stop referring to stuff like that, its simply not true.

That was just a poor attempt at finding some kind of excuse for the tackle. I really hope that justice is dispensed to him in the next match.

Any idea what minute of the game that happened in?

Especially if he was attempting a gouge - there's no knowing what happened in the seconds before hand - it's a possibility.
That said grewcock has a reputation as a dirty player, which did him no favours whatsoever.

Not 100% sure but it was in the first half. Id hazard a guess at about the 20 minute mark, up in the All Blacks 22 as far as I remember.
    jank wrote:

Not really, but that doesnt take away from the fact that at times the All Blacks were overly aggressive after the ball had gone.

That wasnt a punch, that was an assault and he couldnt even defend himself.
In the 8 months he missed about 5 games, great punishment.

Can we really critice the All blacks when we have Danny "cannibal" grewcock in are team?

Mealamu got a sore finger, brian o driscoll dislocated shoulder. Yeh i think we can.

If a player finds himself at the wrong side and bottom of a ruck, he'll get what is coming to him cos he is in wrong place wrong time so what was a finger doing in Grewcock's mouth ? Grewcock in the heat of the moment could be forgiven to assume that an attempt to gouge him was been made ?

He did deny it and there was no skin broken so where was the evidence ?

Interesting article on Umaga's lack of remorse which imo and that of the writer merely adds insult to injury. I still can't believe they haven't been banned

I hate to admit it but i kinda feel like Red Raven atm. I know it's bad but what can you do, if the IRB doesnt enforce laws it will generate more anger and violence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 565 ✭✭✭zokrez

    Good article ruggie.

I kinda feel this has all gone on far too long but having read comments from BOD it is obvious he is livid and wont let it go. Having read that article I am beginning to think that the incident is NOT going to be forgotten about in a hurry and will have recriminations further down the line for rugby in general. Sadly I can see the All Blacks been booed at Lansdowne which will not be nice. If AB will 2nd test neither of the culprits will be playing in the 3rd test.

Whats the situation with the tackle now? Has it officially been pawned off as no big deal and no come back what so ever ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

    more or less

Basically BOD is now being portrayed as a whinger

He deserves to be hit and HARD! There is no class in him at all, if there was he could have apologised. It would have cost him nothing. I really hope he and Keven get to spend a long time regretting their actions last week.

PS No I'm not bitter that the best team won on Saturday, but I really am about the spear tackle.

Thats the thing that pisses me off the most  People (the NZ press) claiming that its all over hyped because the Lions had a ****e game. Yeah we know the lions played a really really crap game and we will be the first to admit it but that spear tackle has ****ed up O'Driscoll and that wanker Umanage hasnt shown a shread of remorse for it & he hasnt be punished for it ;)

If no one was cited for it then in the eyes of the laws (of rugby) they did no wrong. I guess if they apologised they'd be admittign they did wrong.

Where was all the up roar when d'arcy speared omeone earlier in the tour? he should of been cited, but he wasnt. Move on.

Its not like Irish players have always been angels and never done anything dirty.

Lol did that player get double teamed off the ball? We never claimed Irish Players are saints. D'arcy's tackle was a kind of spear he hardly drove the person into the ground so not really a spear tackle.
Also did the player he do it to receive an extremely badly dislocated shoulder?
You are right in the sense that the spear tackle is an illegal move though, and people who use it should be punished.

I didn't really do it to get him back in the vengence sense.

I feel strongly that he should not be receiving unquestioned accolades for sportsmanship when he has so obviously failed to be sporting in this instance. I'm merely setting the record straight: on one occasion he merited great praise, and on another, great criticism.
