    Hi Folks,
Just bought a new Dell Inspirion 2200 and would like to transfer from my Dv Camcorder to a DVD. Is Firewire the way to go, or use a USB 2.0 which are on it already. For Firewire can I just buy a port and plug it into the PC Card Slot and how much are these....so many questions...:confused:

USB2 is faster than firewire isn't it..... Anyway you could add firewire for 23euro here http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=120950&cks=PRL .

USB 2.0 has a theoretical faster maximum throughput, but in reality, firewire is much faster. Particulary when writing/reading at the same time.

also, most Video cams with USB, only allow you to transfer photos through it.

Firewire, 11 years later is still the way to go for video IMO and it the DeFecto standard.

You can pickup a firewire card cheap enough, usually they dont even requre drivers as the technology is so old.

    SouperComputer is quite right.

USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire but only in theory. The max transfer rate of USB 2.0 is 480Kbps, whereas Firewire is 400Kbps (there's a "new" Firewire interface now, Firewire 800 that goes up to 800Kbps). This is only on paper though - in "real life", Firewire almost always beats USB 2.0.

DV cams come with a Firewire port as standard and many popular video editing applications will be able to fully control your camera through it (fast forward, rewind, etc).

Firewire all the way.... At least when it comes to video.

Firewire PCMCIA cards start at €23 on Komplett but you'll pay another €10 for shipping with them, so shop around:

With USB you will drop frames when transferring video - firewire will not. Also with a firewire i/f you should have far more control over the video device. Go firewire if you want a real workable solution.

you also need a 4 pin ( camera end ) to 6 pin ( card end ) firewire cable if it doesn't ship with that card

and you need software to capture the video , windows moview maker is ..well crap

try the budget Ulead stuff or I am selling roxio medai creator 7 for €85 , video capture , editing and dvd creation suite and a photo editing package all in one
