High-end Camera Recommendation

    Hey,

I know the camera recommendation threads have been done to death, but I have taken a look around and they all seem to be budget - mid level cameras that people are looking for. I am looking to purchase a top of the range digital SLR camera for the company I work for and hopefully you guys can help me out!

The budget is circa €1,000 but it all depends no whether I can get what I want for around that price. Requirements are very high resolution (I assume 6 megapixel+) and an excellent zoom lens (doesn't matter if this must be purchased seperately). That's all I have really been given to work with, so it leaves me relatively flexible in what I can recommend.

So, what do people recommend bearing in mind the specs above?

Serbian - at that price/spec you're looking at the Nikon D70 or the Canon 350D. Personally I went for the Nikon and am very happy with it. There are strong views in both camps and at least one other thread on this board comparing them. There are lots of reviews available online, including a detailed comparison on www.kenrockwell.com . Either camera will do the job very well for you. For build, 'feel' and the better quality standard lens I chose the D70.

Thanks, I was just taking a look at the Canon 350D there and it looks good. I'll check out the reviews to see which I like the sound of.

    Thanks for the help.

Im a Canon person but im not going to say you must get the 350D.

I actually don't think you can go wrong with either the D70 or 350D. They're both pretty sweet cameras

Two good recommendations there. I like the feel of the Nikon alot and some complain that the 350D is too small for anyone with normal sized hands. Not having handled it I can't comment there.

If the budget will stretch to it, you could get a 20D from the likes of www.technikdirekt.com who currently have it stocked at €1274 albeit without a lens. If the budget is of the non-stretchy type, you couldn't go wrong with either of the two listed above (or the newer D50). You could also do alot worse than to order from technikdirekt. I got mine from there and it was all handled very quicklys

I think either the 350D or the D70. But if you want a decent fast zoom get a 300D and spend the rest on the lense. But you did ask about top of the range and neither of these is top of the range, and you won't even get near with €1000.

Fair enough, I know they aren't exactly top of the range, but I would still consider them high-end. The camera is for a bunch of graphic designers who complained about the digital camera that we already had :p so it's not for a professional photographer or anything.

If you decide to go with the Canon 350D it may be worth looking at buying it in a package together with the 17-85 IS EFs lens. There are good savings when the two are bought together. I've bought from Tecknikdireckt.de before and find them good. Customer support is available in English and they respond quickly to emails.

Just read through this thread here and just thought i'd add in a little something, if you are considering the nikon d70 just be aware that there are 2 models, the older D70 and a more recent D70S.

Not much of a difference between the two really, the D70S has a 2" screen compared to the 1.8" on the D70 and the D70S has a newer stronger batterey and upgraded firmware to fix a few issues with the D70.
As far as i know the firmware is available for th D70 to fix the issues with it and it essentially becomes a D70S but with a slightly less powerfull battery and .2" less of an lcd screen.

Only reason i know this is coz my brother just ordered the D70S from www.digiwowo.net earlier this week.

Thanks for that. I actually read about the differences on the site that OBrien posted in the first reply. You can see the article here.
