    A TV legend, folks.....

1st person to appear on Channel 4, on Countdown, on 2nd November 1982, plus a regional news presenter in Yorkshire for many years.

    A sad day. RIP Twice-nightly.

Poor him, poor us, poor Carol!

    Wonder if Countdown'll continue?

He was having a heart op today, but was suffering from pneumonia for a few weeks.
Countdown was due to be filmed this week with stand in guest presenters (former guests from Dictionary Corner.)

    61 I believe.

No way? I'd have guessed mid-40s.

The guy always seemed a bit like an old man you say hello to on the corner of the street, and you always wishing that you had a conversation with before he died.

    /\/\ I think that came out wrong/odd.

    R.I.P.

    yup.. it's true folks :(
I hope they continue the programme though in his memory.
Gonna be a tough show to record on Monday if it goes ahead.

They record six weeks in advance AFAIK. Plus, I think Carol said she'd quit when Richard does...

There's a piece of video of him from the 70's, when he was working for Yorshire TV being bitten by a ferret. Same expressions.

They should let Carol pick out the hymns & psalms for the funeral service.

    His Mrs can help,
'2 big ones & 3 of your choice carol', she'll say
& then when they're picked a clock can go off while they sort out the order for them to be said in!

    Tick tock tick tock...
    Diddlee dee... dum!

    A sad day for Tv
One of the few presenters on Tv who was a pleasure to watch.
    His appeal transcends all ages.
    A legend.

Wow, those rare weekday afternoons when I'm home will be emty now. A shame. He was always good for a truly terrible pun or joke that would have you laughing in spite of yourself. I'll miss him.

    That's sad news.

IIRC, channel4 are currently running 'how would you like to be remembered' ad in which he features as the last guest face. I hope they'll have enough cop to pull it immediately.

    I'm actually in shock

Yeah I was thinking of that. He said he wanted to be remembered as the first man on Channel 4. I suppose he'll he remembered for more than just that.

Cant help but wonder what Top Gear will do. IIRC he was the slowest guest around the track. I hope they dont sneak him off quietly.

They should replay that lap. It was classic Whiteley, you just knew he'd be the slowest.

    Mike.

Do any of you guys remember the Gotcha that Noel Edmonds did on him on Noels House Party? Viewers voted it the best ever Gotcha, and having seen it, I'd be inclined to agree. It was just an episode of Contdown, where loads of stuff was going wrong (obviously!). It ended with the conundrum appearing with three blank spaces and the word HOGCAT. Richard lookd completely baffled. When the answe turned over as GOTCHA, a moment of TV gold had been created. I'll remember him for that!

Do you know what,I was just thinking while reading about how he was just out of surgery a couple of days and then died.I bet(assuming) maybe that superbug got a hold of him(MSRA).

Alot of it going around these days.

That was on a countdown thing presented by Jeremy Beadle on C4 a few weeks ago and it was brilliant. Its the best one that I can remember.

    From Wikipedia:
He died on 26 June 2005 at Leeds General Infirmary shortly after an operation to combat an infection in a heart valve following a serious case of pneumonia. Shortly beforehand he had missed his first show on Countdown in 23 years.

The final line kinda hit me.

I was really shocked when I heard the news the other night. I was even more shocked when I heard how old he was.

I actually remember watching the first episode when it was first aired, and many subsequent episodes since.

23 years on the same show. Real legendary stuff.

Hopefully they'll continue the show but it'll certainly be different without Twice-Nighlty. :(

    B.
