For what so you can't even read the forums without registering (i'm a member by the way) Also to read raving statements like What a waste the WOT campaign is to reopen the western rail corridor, There is life out side Dublin people wake up us culchies need transport too, roads in the west are about as good as our average banana republic in africa, Rail is the answer for clean, reliable, fast and sustainable transport, Not huge Motorways through the country with tolls on them (by private companies) after already paying out about from €200 to €700 raod tax and at least 70cent tax on every litre of petrol and diesel. If the roads weren't tolled i wouldn't mind but tolling the roads is the last straw.

There is a lot more to transport than Dublin the fact half the population live within 50 miles of Dublin means it rightly deserves investment in infrastructure plus it is slowly gaining the critical mass to support a decent rail based public transport system. Remember the investment we might now get has been planned since the mid 1970's and put on the long finger.

Galway Ennis Limerick Cork Navan are all on the P11 hit list, Limerick could be a real big thing in rail transport with a little bit of thought. Cork is all go already with Midleton reopening approved. What is currently preventing this expansion is the crazy one off housing policy you will never get a proper public transport system unless you have the critical mass, Cork is moving the right way, Meath CC seems a little confused and Limerick is a problem since you have to deal with 4 different councils (Limerick City, Limerick County, Tipperary North and Clare)

Nothing will happen to improve public transport unless people start to give
out and take proactive steps to lobby for improvement its all to easy to sit on the fence and give out without providing a sensible way forward

Due to a bug in the software on the P11 boards allowing guests to read also allows them to post. For a combination of reasons it was thought safer to ban users from posting anonymously which in turns means they can't read. Its a right pain, but from an administration point of view its the only sane course of action hopefully this bug will be dealt with soon

All you need is an email address which is hidden by default, the registration procedure is just like the one boards uses

Problem is nobody in Limerick lives "on" the railway lines, largely due to the county council sucking development out of the city.

    I totally agree,

Between innaprpriate development in South Co Clare and North East Limerick as granted by the local County Councils there has been a lot population taken out of Limerick City. Make no misatake Limerick has great potential as a City having inherited a very good street pattern with large plot sizes.

The outlook for the region is very good I feel despite much government policy failure in relation to planning and transport, but past failures must be learned from. Clare finally appears to be getting its act together and the announcement of a new station at Sixmilebridge with a park n ride site to service the local bungalow belt should be followed up by the 50:50% joint venture between IE and Beaxwalk developments to connect up Shannon with Commuter services which would then work in an Ennis-Limerick-Shannon triangle. All that is required is to build up the population base in places like Ennis, Sixmilebridge, Shannon and Cratloe and this line could be a real winner. Interestingly Shannon has a population of 19,000 but has a workforce of 35,000 which is increasing all the the time.

If this line could be combined with a re-opening of the Foynes line as far as Raheen Industrial Estate all four major employment centres in the region would be connected by rail. I think a little vision is required to go-supply side and wait for residential development to catch up with the employment centres of Ennis/ Shannon and Limerick/Raheen.

http://www.answers.com/topic/rail-transport-in-ireland , nice map - not a patch on the 1922 map but shows that the lines to the West of Co Limerick and north into Clare still exist.

It doesnt really bother me that much that you have to log in to view their site. Even if I did agree with anything Platform 11 have to say about transport planning their preachy tone and intolerant attitude is enough to make me stop listening. They get way too much oxygen as it is for a bunch of trainspotters with a lopsided view to public transport and inflated sense of self importance - let's not forget who actually is in charge of public transport and it's certainly not P11.

    Hi Klimseven,
We're a pretty diverse bunch in P11, with many arguments and differences of opinion. We welcome debate and we welcome new members.

Sorry, I'm afraid I have forgotten, if indeed I ever knew. Who is in charge of public transport?

And could they be persuaded to do a bit more about improving it, e.g by building a metro, or an interconnector, or something, or all of these things?

Its clearly not Cullen either, Platform11 is not in charge we however are in the background pushing for sensible realisable improvements

Its all too easy sit on the fence, if you are pissed off, don't sulk about it give those in charge a roasting nothing will happen unless people start to give out and make sure those in charge hear about it, we are far too inclined to sit back and let the mess continue

To be fair, the above comments (not repeated verbatim) were pulled by IRN management.
