Windows XP and 2000 wont load after setup

I want to install either XP or 2000 to my old PC an AMD500.

However when I setup either, it restarts to run windows for the first time, but the PC keeps restarting at the point where it attempts to load windows.

It goes through the hard disk checks etc at the start but then cuts off as windows starts to load.

I have reinstalled Windows 98 without a bother

Have you tried to start in safe mode to see at what point it restarts..

It restarts at the point after I choose safe mode.

Well theres a black screen first with a bit of activity in the machine and then it restarts.

98 will have to do I guess.

In safe mode does it get as far as the list of files scrolling down the screen. If so where does it stop...
What is the spec of your machine>? Is it suitable for XP?

Just another thought Are you installing XP from a full version (SP1 or 2?) or are you using a recovery disc that may be designed for a certain brand.....

In the Safe mode options, try choosing step by step confirmation to find out what point the system reboots at, then rerun it and choose no to the service its trying to load and see does it get any further. You can use the recovery console to try and disable it if it isn't a vital one. Once you know what causes it google the service to see if there's any work arounds.

With XP, when the Cd is taken out I am getting a blue screen .

User32.dll is corrupt. Header checksum doesnt match computed checksum

I deleted the field and re-expanded it from the CD to the hard drive as per the microsoft support site, but to no avail. The XP disk is a recovery disk for dell, but as far as I know the 2000 is not.

Most Dell cd's are locked down to Dell hardware and search for the service tag string in the bios. Have you tried installing into a different folder as per the article? Run memtest on the system also?
