    Thats bull IMHO!!!

Your upload should be no lower than 10Kbit/s as it directly affects you download speed.
What speed connection have you anyway???...1Mbit or 2Mbit???

2mbit man it is bull! i know thats why im raging !

To test your speed use the java app at:

    www.irishisptest.com/

    Irishpimpdude:
I have 2 comps setup in my home network.
    One is a modern AMD64 and the other is a AMD 500 K6-2(about a 300MHz P2).
The old comp gets about your speed Irishpimpdude from the connection when the newer gets 214KB...so if your comp is a pile of sh!t that coule be an answer.

But that 4Kbyte upload speed is more than likely the cause of your slow download as there needs to be a certain minimum ratio to maintain a download speed.
At 2Mbit download a 128k upload is the absolute minimum.

What are you getting on your router statistics for your line speed anyway...1024 or 2048??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Irishpimpdude

yeah i have a 3.0ghz p 4, 512mb ddr ram etc so it is good enough! i usually get 215kb/s but this started happening since yesterday and even my p3 comp thats on my wireless gets around 100-200kb/s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭axer

Are you connecting at 2048kb? or a lower figure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Irishpimpdude

yes im still connecting at 2048/128

Post your router DSL stats to see if there is a problem there.

Just did a test on my 2Mb line -> 123.28 KBps.

Eircom tech support is S*H*I*T. It took me 2-3 months for them to go out and check the exchange to find I was actually set up for a 1Mb line instead for a 2Mb. Tech support kepts saying RADSL, RADSL. Customer service wouldnt log my complaint because it was inside agreement. Gave out like ****e, got my money back and 3 free months free BB, plus call charges etc.

and its supposed to be a minimum 1024 if its a 2048 down Dsl service. Better ring them techs in Eircom again.

Nope. Eircom only gaurantee at least 25KB/sec download speed. While thats not really fair considering 25 * 8 = a theoretical 200Kb connection (a 300Kb connection realistically). Eircom techs will not bother checking it out when they can easily just say its inside the agreed terms.

OP: did you go over the limit?

they started throttling your connection if you break the limit

contention at the exchange, contention at the backhaul. Take your pick.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 458 ✭✭juliuspret

Are eircom throttling those who go over the CAP???

Thats the first I heard of it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 839 ✭✭✭zap

I've never heard of eircom throttling anyone for going over the cap, where did you get that from CyberGhost. I get 1.71 Mbps down and 103kbps up on eircom's 2 meg package,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭axer

I think contention too. unless you got some application running on your computer taking some of your bandwidth.

the eircom tech guy told me,

I rang them about the slow speed, they checked lines and everything, and then he got back to me and said "because you exceeded your limits for this month, your "priority" is lowered"

    CyberGhost

Was there anything said about possible "fines" for exceeding the CAP??

How much have you downloaded this month anyway???

Are you now placed in the "badboy" grouping with other heavy downloaders now or something...odd.

    1. no, they just told me to keep it down

    2. 30-32gb

    3. don't know

I think this is happening to all the newly signed customers, all the old ones don't have such problems.

Hahaha....well youve downloaded 200% of your CAP....so there was always a chance that something might happen.

In the UK Tiscali or one of the ISP which at one time had no download CAP would move around the high users so that they would all be grouped together.
This was so that normal users could download as they required and not have slow speeds...which would translate into calling up the ISP and annoy the Call Centre people.

If eircom was implimenting such an approach then I would say it would only happen in Dublin due to the population density.
