    have a DELL
XP PRO SP2 alright , that can be lent for use ,

Is it a certain app you use that doesn't like SP2?

What Dell is it , you shouldn't need to enter the key during install or afterwards?

sp2 is fantastic if i want a computer that shuts down every ten minutes. theres some sort of conflict with my gfx card (9800 pro) that ive tried everything to fix. any time i do anything video related from gaming to watching avi's it either freezes until i press the power button or saves me the hassle by simply switching off. sp1 does me fine so i cba trying to solve the problem anymore.
i got the sp2 cd of my m8 and the big eejit threw out his old sp1 copy. i shake my fist at him. /shakes fist

whats vlk deckie27? and whats the difference between that and retail?

its not a dell formatman. self made. parts from komplett.

can no one help the commander? :(

It depends on the installation. Mostly during the installation I think. And If you didnt do it during installation you have to enter it during the activation.

    It what organisations use
    here
Volume License media for impacted products will no longer include a preconfigured product ID or a product key on the CD packaging. The appropriate Volume License or Online Services Product Key must be used for desktop or network administrator installs.

Additionally, retail product CDs (for example, boxed product purchased from a retail outlet) can no longer be used for multiple installations. If you currently use CDs from a retail product kit for installations, these processes will affect your installation procedures. Volume License or Microsoft® MSDN® media acquired through Volume License are the only media available for multiple installations. These media will require the use of a Volume License or an Online Services Product Key that will be assigned to your company or institution.
