My cousin got a laptop a few days ago (Acer Aspire 5021WLMi)

Everything going fine, until the cd cover 'fell off'

It's a slot loaded drive, the drive works fine, but every time he ejects a CD the cover falls off!

    Attached is jpeg.

I'm going over later on, any ideas of what to do? Have to say this is the first time i've ever heard of this.

It's obviously still under warranty (1yr collect and return) but would be a shame to send it back because of a piece of plastic falling off!

(EDIT: seems one of the 'clips' might be missing from the cover. See other attachment)

Idiot, it is a slot loaded drive.

Drive works perfectly, just the plastic covering!

Ah it has to have some kind of cover - the company that makes the plastic is presumably different from the company that makes the leccy bits and who knows what colour laptop the last vendor will have (hint boys, if it isn't black it's usually grey).

If it was out of warranty I'd recommend careful placement of glue. Those clips are not very sturdy for the component they're put on these days (it wasn't always so) and some day perhaps someone will get wise again and spend that extra tuppence per machine on a series of double clips like they used to do rather than single ones. I would guess that they're single ones as they can be assembled faster by small Chinese people in Sapian earning fourteen pence a week and jam every other day. It looks to me like there's at least one broken plastic rivet thingie there and one or two of the quick clips are probably bent as well. You could try bending them back but that might do them in as well.

Send it back. Unfortunately as you might guess they'll want it all back rather than just the drive.

Yeah, he rang up laptopsdirect.co.uk and said his problem.

They said they'd send out a new one by courier, and when that arrives just give the courier the old lappy (Thumbs up to laptopsdirect, laptop ordered monday, delivered tuesday, and obviously a good returns policy too!)

He rang acer then and they said they'd pick it up and repair it, anything within 2-4 weeks.

Needless to say he's gone with the laptops direct option :D

    Thanks anyway

a bit off topic but do you know how he bought of laptops direct? ie irish credit card or bank transfer?

their website states they only take uk cards.

I presumed it was by credit card, i'll get an answer off him later on and post it here.

He said he rang them up, and they rang bank of ireland in dublin to confirm that the (irish) credit card was okay. Then they accepted the order.

So yes, they do accept irish credit cards, but only if you ring them up!

yeah they accept irish credit cards as ive ordered mine a couple of days ago.

rang me up to 'verify i was who i say i was'!, wanted someone else to verify it was me too! a bit ott. & all that delayed my order being processed until about 5pm yesterday so it wont be with me until tomorrow, wednesday. (i placed the order late friday evening.)

i dont care though, so long as it arrives intact with no mixing pixels *crosses fingers & touches wood* i'll be happy. ive been waiting on this for over 6months anyway, a couple of more days wont kill me. however my laptop has just dropped £20 in price which is very annoying.
