Back pain

    I started a kitchen porter job yesterday. After about 5 minutes of washing the pots in the sink my back really started to pain. I'm 6'4 and the sink is really low. Anyway, I'll have to spend around 2 hours a day at this sink and I just stuck the pain the last 2 days. Will this get better or worse if I keep doing it? Are there any excersises I can do to help the back? The good thing is I have a very expensive message chair in the house to sit on when I get home. :)

    I'd say it'll get worse before it gets better.
    I'd advise you to try and keep your back straight when doing the washing up.
    Don't slouch your shoulders in.
    It will probably be difficult to maintain this discipline throughout the day.

    I'm not an ergonomist or a physiotherapist but I have some training in this area and experience of back pain too.

    In my opinion, ergonimically speaking, the sink should be at a height that would be comfortable for you and would not require that you stoop or lean at all. If you have to stretch your arms down to the sink you will lean forward and throw off your centre of gravity - that'll put pressure on your back.

    However at 6ft4" you are outside the "median range" for ergonomic design and so unfortunately that means most furniture is not designed with taller folk, like your good self in mind.

    I'd guess that your back pain will worsen and that you should consider seeing a physiotherapist who could provide you with exercises that will strenghten the relevant muscles.
