Question about Car hire in the USA.

What insurance do you need to drive a hire car. They quote that Collision/loss damage wavier and liability insurance is included in the prices. Is this suffient for use on the roads over there?

    Thanks for your advice.

If they've included Collision Damage Waiver insurance in the quote then you should be generally fine. Here are two sites with some tips. The Visa link has a helpful Q&A, though it applies to hiring cars using a Visa credit card. Call your credit card issuer locally because you may be covered if you use your card to pay for the car rental. Hope this helps. :)

Not directly to do with your question, but be aware most US car rental companies will ONLY rent if the driver's credit card is used. They use them much more as an additional means of ID rather than just payment like here. We couldn't find anyone who would rent to us using cash, and as the person I wanted to drive didn't have a credit card, although I had, we couldn't rent a car.

Could you not hae rented and put your friend down as a named driver?

No, because I only had a bike licence, not a car.

There is also Minimum State Liability Insurance, Supplementary Liability Insurance(SLI) and Uninsured motorist protection (UMP). I'm not sure how important it is to have any of these.

You could try booking your car through an agent and not the rental company, that way you will have all the necessary insurance included.
