Thunderbird and Avast!

I'm using Thunderbird as my email client, and I have recently started using avast! as my virus scanner.

Avast! has a plug-in for MS Outlook (which I also use), so no problems there.

There are problems with avast! and Thunderbird however. Avast! slows Thunderbird to an absolute crawl... and since my computer is not the newest / fastest its a real pain.

I would ideally like to keep using both bits of software.

    Any ideas?

I don't use outlook, but do use thunderbird and AVG antivirus on my laptop (free)... which includes an email scanner. its not lightning fast, but not noticeably slow enough to be a bother...
