For "general" use (not by me).

One where refills don't cost a fortune. :)

I've been looking on the dell site and they have some pretty cheap ones. As do dabs (lexmarks). Anyone experience with these? What are refill costs like?

I have a morbid fear of Lexmark printers, I've never seen one last longer than 18 months... they just sort of keel over and die... at hom we've had one HP 840C for the past 6 years, during which time three lexmarks and an epson have been put to sleep.

If refills are going to be the major consideration then unless they plan to be printing a lot of photos avoid anything with a "photo cartridge".. pointless extra expenditure... so anyway reccomendation wise.. a mid-range (120-180EUR) HP deskjet :)

We've had a lexmark printer in the house for nearly 6 years and it still works fine - I suppose only because its not used that often. The cartridges for it are quite expensive but you can get them DIY refill kits in aldi or lidl for less than a tenner.

Most of the entry level HP's are now shipping with sub-20ml cartridges, which will cost you a fortune in consumables. If you're considering HP, try and get a Business Inkjet 1000 or above(seen recently around the €160 mark). It may be a bit steep at the start, but it takes seperate Indigo/Magenta/Yellow and a Black up to 69ml, for about the same cost as a 19ml Black on the entry models.

Not had many problems with Lexmark, but have had nightmares with Epson and Canon. Dell printers seem okay, but consumables are once again, low volume and expensive.

Epson Photo R200. And cartridges from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk

There was anothe site listed before which had cheaper refills than blankdiscshop, but i've lost the link now.

Epson would be my choice too.
I use an Epson Stylus C66 and I've had no problems with it.
Plus you can get replacement cartridges for around a fiver each at www.inkjet.ie

I have an Epson C62, though it's my 2nd C62 in a year (though in fairness, when I rang Epson, they had it replaced in 24 hours, so at least their guarantee is solid), and my 3rd Epson printer in 4 years!

    For consumables, I use www.cartex.co.uk
