Ok so a relative has asked me if I would make them a website, im no artist and they are aware of this so its just some pretty low level stuff. (personally I imagine 10 hits a year :p but anyway)

Copyright and stuff, anything I create is it copyrighted? And what do I wright at the bottom of the page?

Its going to be a geaneology website about a paticular name of family, does this mean I have to get any sort of lisence?

Is there any harm in doing up a page in just HTML and Javascript? open to being exploited?

What domain would you suggest? Cheapest if possible that has as little hassle as possible (I think .ie requires all sorts of legal documents or somethin).

Its going to be a very basic website, thanks for all info :)

Can you put it in your own 'free' webspace?
AFAIK all the providers give it. Genealogy people will mainly find your site through links and searches, so having the actual name in the domain is not at all necessary.

Anything you create 'is' copyrighted, but people steal wholesale off genealogy pages - not a lot you can do about it really.

For genealogy pages, you have to make sure you get as many links as possible - obviously from others of the same name, but also from places like Cyndi's list, ancestry.com etc. You might have to spend some time on various genealogy forums (genealogy.com and the like) answering queries about the name, and adding a link to your site, so that people will get to know about it.

There could be issues re living family members not wanting their details open for all to see for security reasons/age disclosure, etc

There's no requirement to put anything at the bottom; anything you write is copyright unless specifically stated otherwise.

Ok thanks alot for the info guys, sounds pretty straightforward, and thanks for the great advice on exposure newgrange.

Smileygal what you said could also be true, but the details wont be very detailed just Country of birth and date of birth and name, but I imagine it would be smart to ask them first anyway :)

Do a google for webpage templates and you should find loads of free templates to make your page at least look good. Hosting it on geocities or one of the other free servers is probably the best plan too, unless you want to pay for having no ads on the page that is.

IMO by far the best free web host is atspace. No ads, nothing fancy, just plain hosting. You dont get any editor, extras thrown in though. The only limit is the max file size is 200KB. Your ISP probably gives you free webspace as well though.

It seems to be very, very slow. Try your ISP.
