Thinking of studying at night

I completed a National Cert in Computing in ITB (Blanchardstown IT) and have a defferred place for the Diploma course which starts in September.

Thing is, I've been having doubts about doing an IT course any more. I've been looking through various recruitment sites and have seen barely any jobs looking for graduates. Most look for a minium of 2 years experience.

I have recently been employed by o2 full time. Its a good salary for someone's first full time job and they offer a grant to employee's if they wish to goto college at night.

I was thinking of studying business management at night, as in my previous job i had the position of assistant manager and did enjoy it.

I'm afraid of quitting, going back to college and finishing the IT course to come out with no job and regretting not using the 2 years to try studying business management.

I'd like to hear some people's views or suggestions.

I did a cert and finished it in 02. I was given the chance to move on to the degree version or move into a business course.

Have you checked if you can do that?

On a similar but not exactly identical topic, I'm thinking of doing an undergrad evening degree course at night after I get through the damned Leaving while continuing to work full time - anyone any thoughts on that?

I'm currently on the ITB Higher Diploma in Science in Computing. Which is partime. I'm not finding it great to be honest. The workload is too high for a part time course. Its also too advanced, as its aimed at people with no IT background, but they are covering advanced subjects, and doing them in a way thats extremely time consuming, for no real benefit.

I work full time in IT, and I found doing it in the evenings very tough. Any minor setbacks seemed to constantly eat away any free time for study. I ended up shattered. Obviously most of the rest of the class had the same problems as there only about 8 or 9 from the orignal 20 who started still on the course.

On the question of IT vs business management, I'd pick the latter. Simply because theres a much wider salary scale for business managers and it can be a lot more satisfying. IT can become souless very quickly. I like IT and have been at it for years, but anyone I know whos doing really well at it, as moved into the managment, business or technical presales side of things.

The CPL salary survey would seem to support that impression.

    Thanks for the replies.

I've got some descisions to make. I've also been looking into get some CISCO cerfitications as i enjoyed networking in college and was encouraged by my lecturer to get certified. I just need to browse back over my CCNA notes and actually sit down and take the test.
