i have an ati radeon 9800 pro. since installing sp2 it crashes every ten mins or so. the vpu recover resets it. its definitely something to do with service pack 2 because i installed it before and the problem started, so i uninstalled it and it stopped.

now for reasons i wont get into i have to keep sp2 and the problems back. i have all the latest drivers etc. this happen to anyone else?

found on google something suggesting i turn off vpu recover but then the whole computer crashes

the only other thing that comes up when i put in 9800 pro is hundreds of ppl listing their specs

I'm running a 9800XT in XP Pro SP2 with the latest drivers and no problems.

One thing that did give me some issues awhile back, was the stupid new fancy looking Catalyst control center, which heavily relies on the .NET framework. Have you tried using the "old school" style drivers, without the control center (and thus, no .NET framework needed)?

Another thing to try, may be this:

    - Remove the ATI drivers in Safe Mode and remove your motherboard chipset drivers.
    - Reboot to Normal Mode and install the latest mobo chipset drivers. Even if not prompted, reboot the PC again and only after that, install the latest ATI drivers only.

I had to switch back to older drivers before because I was getting system resets. I still have the (very) old drivers if you want them.

i've tried a variety of drivers, from the ones on the cd to all the options on ati.com to some other random ones called omega drivers that are supposed to be good for gaming. they all make the card crash on a regular basis. i dont think its a problem with the mobo cos it always worked before i installed sp2 and theres no relevant updates on the asus website anyway.

the thing is that every now and then i try sp2 just to see if the problem is still there. about 5 times in total. every time i install it the card crashes. when i uninstall it, it stops again. its definitely an sp2 issue. id like to uninstall sp2 but im not in a position to do that at the mo. has anyone else had this problem with an ati card?

i suppose ill try those drivers khannie. unless theyre the same ones on the cd......?

mp3guy, im nominating you for most unhelpful post of 2005

use the drivers that are on the cd- my barebone running windows xp pro and sp2 same problem with the catalyst drivers - use the cd ones instead they work fine.

Ummm.... I think he has been down that route already:

Commander Vimes, you've mentioned you uninstalled/re-installed SP2 a couple of times with success... Is a clean install of Windows XP SP2 a possibility? Tedious I know, but you're running out of ATI driver combinations there...

They're not. I'll upload them for you tonight and post a link here.

    disable vpu recover, easy ;)

tried disabling vpu cyrus. then instead of freezing for 30 secs and then a warning saying vpu encountered an error or whatever, the computer turns off. not what id call an impovement :D im goin to try khannies drivers and if that doesnt work im off to find someone with an original xp cd.
the reason i have to have sp2 atm in my windows cd is fooked so i got one off my m8 (my own cd key of course) and the only one he has has sp2 slipstreamed onto it.
