    I can't prefer one of the other, they are both excellent and at different jobs.

    nvidia linux.
    ati beat nvidia in the first gen direct x cards (time i was buying my card)

    Last gen, i was hardcore ATI all the way, they were simply better than the Nvidia's. With this gen, i have to say its Nvidia who have the lead, so i'd go with them.

    Next gen is coming out in a few weeks, so who knows what'll happen then. I have my bets on ATI and their new core.

    I've never had an ATI card. And I've just ordered a 6800GT.So, I went for nvidia purley because dont fix whats not broken. I only had a quick look at ATI cards and went straight for nvidia.

    I don't think you should buy computer hardware because you prefer one company over another. Look at what each has to offer, then decide.

    they're both the same really in terms of graphics for your euro. only a few fps differences

    i got an ati because it had the tv in, with the aiw version

    What a useless question.....sorry but Nvidia and ATI sell more then one card at a time my friend, it really depends how much you want to blow on the card that makes one company better then the other, 6800GT? Personally I'd look around for an X800XL that might make a better bang per buck figure in the end.

    Nah, the 6600GT is by far the best bang for your buck nowadays. You can pick em up for about €260. Tis a steal at that price.

    is it the ti4200/9800pro of its generation?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

    I'd say it is the 9800Pro of its generation. Others might disagree, but i think its a damn good card.

    *pats his budget 9600Pro*

    Oooh, thats one cheap x850! Now, if only it was half that price so i could buy one. Whats the difference between that and the Club3D version, besides €80.

    Decent cooling since the sapphire is already clocked higher than ATi spec for 850pros. As just about the best card on the market it is vgood value

    when i was getting a graphics card a few months ago i went for the best one i could possibly get...turned out to be ATI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭jozi

    I have no preference for either really just get what ever is best value for your budget.
    I got a x800xl a few months ago because at the time they where a good bit cheaper than a 6800gt and has similar performance so it seemed like the best option.
    Which ever card you get if you do your research and shopping around you wont be disapointed in what you get.

    If (linux)
    {
    nvidia = true;
    }
    else
    {
    getBestValueCard(budget);
    }

    Wow. Tyre-kickers.

    Go to http://graphics.tomshardware.com/index.html

    Look for VGA charts, pick the type of card, AGP, PCI-E or whatever your motherboard dictates.

    Take a look at the benchmarks for each game - bear in mind your own taste in games. If you like heavy duty FPS's like FarCry then pay attention to results for these.

    Top card will always be €9999. Thats when people talk about the price/performance "sweet-spot". This is basically when you pay a reasonable chunk of cash for a card that can do its duty well for a reasonable amount of time - including a bit of future-proofing for next generation of games etc.

    In my opinion, the current "sweet spot" is the nVidia 6800GT - an animal of a card thats around long enough to be quite cheap now. Can also be overclocked to 6800 Ultra speeds most of the time - buy of with a capable stock cooler if this interests you - jes.de have a Leadtek one that has a beautiful chunk of copper wrapped around it. Read up though, theres changes afoot - I'm just happy with my setup at present - you need to inform yourself and decide on what fits the bill...... google all the candidates and read for an hour or two.....

    Or else buy ATI because your cousins friends neighbour sez he heard they woz da best.

    I've been ATI for years - but I'm going nVidia with my next card purely for Linux support. If ATI would get their thumbs out of the arses and support Linux properly I'd stay with them.

    I've had two nvidia cards, and 3 ATi cards, ATi have more brute force, but i've always found their cards glitchy and prone to instability, so i've prefered nVidia cards. my current card is an 128mb ATi X800 and it's been problem free so far...

    TBH my first preference when buying would be nVidia, out of all the systems ive had ive gone through 2 nVidia cards and 1 Ati. but then again if i get a better bang for my buck as regards preformance its either one or the other. but im going to wait and see what comes of the next generation of cards and see who is top's, im thinking of buying a card soon so ill wait around.
