Rod fishing in Waterford

Id like to take up fishing, so I got myself a rod & reel, and a box of lidl's finest fishing bits and pieces.

Im only interested in the basic off the rocks or a pier stuff for starters, and Ive been told its a good time of year to catch mackerel.

Where is good in Waterford for this kind of fishing, and can anyone give me the basic do's and donts of catching something (other than seaweed) in Waterford.. (City or county..).

Im going to try little feather like bait that came in the Lidl box, probably off the rocks in Boatstrand near Dunhill... a good place to start??

    Cheers!

For mackerel you will want little silver baits. Mackerel generally eat sprats which are small, thin and silver. Saw a few (sprats) in Dunmore East last weekend. Also saw people fishing off the pier there.

You probably have feathers, which are fine for mackerel.

Yeah I have little illuminous yellow bait in the shape of a fish with a featherlike tail on it.

I spotted the angling forum alright, just looking for some specific local knowledge. I'll post up there later.

Best luck I ever had was from the headland in Ballymacaw.. the side closest to Dunmore rather than the Brownstown side -- as you drive down to the beach there's a pathway up along the left that'll take you there. Rocks eat the hooks but you'll soon get the hang of how to avoid them.

Also remember seeing a grass snake up there too, kinda crazy.

Thanks for the info.. any tips on how to avoid losing the hooks?

Eh? There is no walkway near Ballybeg, there is one at the end of Cherrymount/Avondale.
