Ok guys, time to bring the 911 out for a while, but before I put it back into storage in sept/oct I want to get it stripped down and painted. Question is, do I keep the standard colour ie: Casablanca (gold), or do I change the colour , I was thinking maybe black??
Its a 79 SC with chrome trim, and brown (Iknow!!) leather interior. Here iws a pic...
Im looking for your opinions as regards..Value drop??
Will it look nice in black, with the chrome
    Any opinions.....Cheers guys..

I've always been with Henry Ford on car colour, and I have to say that I find that colour utterly abhorrent, but won't you be devaluing the car by spraying it a non-original colour? Assuming that's the original colour of course...

Yes its the original colour, which I liked alot when I got it, but now I think looks a little 'classic'. Im sure it will devalue it, or at least I will have to have an answer to a prospective new owner as to why the colour was changed.

I'm more of a customiser than a classic fan so ordinarily I'd be all for changing it to look like you want, it just strikes me in this case that the loss of value would be pretty high and that you might be better off selling or trading it for a black one. But truth be told I'm not much of a Porsche fan so I could be way out on the value front.

TBH I wouldn't be keen on the original colour at all.

I think if anything, a good quailty black or navy paintjob would make the car more desirable.

And I'd really like that targa in the background too. :D

Afaik PaulMn took these when the car was for sale. The targa in the bg is for sale too...or was...c 30k. Lovely cream leather in it too, its a 90 c4.

To a regular joe, sure, but not to a serious collector since they'll have to respray it back to the original colour. I guess it depends on how long he intends keeping it and who he intends selling it to. It's not too far off some people's definition of a classic these days...

Just a thought, I remember a recent episode of top gear where the guys
had to buy cheap porsches.. they were examined by the owners club and they were very disapproving of changes from original...
I would keep it the same colour.. would imagine a serious buyer will buy it for the car it is and the condition rather than colour.
Remember as well, brown leather, that would look gank in a guards red car!!! :D

I didn't take pictures of anything! Must have been another Paul!

Ah, I must be mixing you up with Paul from Classic cars Ireland...or else Ivor took the pivcs, anyhow, the only colour I would have considered is Black. I must say Im not too keen on changing the colour, I just wanted to know your thoughts on it. Cheers.

    Kersh,

Were you getting about 30mpg from your GTO? Just wondering.

No, in or around 20, the 911 gives about 25, and the 300zx tt gives about 12.

If the rest of the car is in original condition then keep it original. If it is modified, changed or updated then changing the colour won't matter a hoot. Changing from a light colour to a dark one brings other challenges - are you going to strip it to the shell prior to painting ($$$)? Do you plan removing the gold and taking the car back to primer or bare metal ($$$$$)? IMO spraying a car rarely gives a factory-fresh finish and if the car just needs freshening then find a really good painter to take it back to the basecoat with Bufflex and relaquer it - I've taken a close look at those pics and you will only make that car worse if you repaint it and don't spend lots of time and money (or maybe you won the Lotto?)

Basically im getting all the trim pulled off, and getting it down to the metal for a full proper respray. Then Im replacing as much of the trim as I can with new parts.

    Yip, Lotto winner alright... ;)

I think that's a lovely colour for that model. It wouldn't suit a newer shape but it contrasts well with the black and silver wheels and the rest of the trim. It's also more unusual and rare and would be a shame to change it.

I think the black might be overbearing as the wheels have black too. Anyway there's loads of black ones around and it's a nightmare to keep clean.

Black would suit that car. I don't like the Gold myself, although it does contribute to the "classic" look.

    I like the Gold.

Kersh. Was the GTO a 3.0 TT?

    hi Kersh

It's always best to keep an original car in its original colour. The fact that your car has the correct Chocolate leather interior, and you were to respray it in black, it would certainly cause some serious frowning of the eyebrows as soon as the doors are opened !!!

so it would be either a case of strip down to the ground, do a full respray on a bare bodyshell, and fit a new interior, or... respray in the original colour. These early SC's will become increasingly sought after, and there is always going to be a premium paid for original, unmodified cars.

That said, correctly modified cars and properly resprayed cars do find a way on the market purely because they have "Porsche" badge. Just try to avoid getting it done as a bodge job by some chancer who is quoting you to do the whole car for just 1500 euro's... then you know it's going to be shoddy workmanship, and you will lose out in the long run.

B.t.w the pictures are indeed mine :) and the 1990 Carrera 4 has long since gone to a new owner.

Paul MN - the gto was a non turbo....hence why I bought the 300zx Twin Turbo :D:D
Paulk - Im leaning towards keeping the colour as is, and it will be a full proper job...lord it needs it... . cant wait to put the stainless exhaust on it, and run it for a while before putting it in for spraying.

    Kersh,

    As a 911 fan (and an ex-spray painter) I say ....DON'T DO IT !!

Keep it original. Buy another if you fancy a different colour - but don't respray it any other colour. :(

    Silvera.
