Can this be rewired safely?

A mate asked me to help him with an issue he is having. He bought this multi card reader (photos attached).

The 9 pin connection does not fit his motherboard as the socket is other way round (if you know what I mean?)? Is it safe to take this connector off and rewire it so it fits the motherboard?

    Hope this makes sense?

    Nope, it doesn't make sense.

Would that be a motherboard USB connector by any chance ?

As a general rule; if a connector doesn't fit, you're trying to plug it into the wrong place.

thats what they generally connect to, however if its an oem motherboard the front-panel connector may be different to the standard (as on the multi-card reader).. if you know the pin-outs its easy to rewire, if you don't then don't :)

Some motherboards have standard USB headers which that'd probably fit, at a guess I'd say your mate's doesn't. If you look for forums dedicated to that motherboard (the manufacturers probably have one) someone there might have already figured out how to do it. Other than that I wouldn't risk it, just buy a new external card reader, I think lidl have them today for about €13.

Does your mate have a dell motherboard, the connectors can be pretty ****e on them, also the connecter looks like a standard connector for usb to me, maybe the usb port on the motherboard is being used and secondly trying to take each wire apart and attacvhing them to the board isnt a bad idea but will take some time/study you will need to find a manual to figure out the function of each pin.
