    Hi,
Received a mail today, and clicked reply. Sent the message and got a failed delivery notice. It was an @eircom address. Tried sending again and the same thing happened. Any ideas why this would happen?

Can't be too much help unless you post up the error or mail headers you received... its most likely one of a few though:

Connection refused: Eircoms mail server is down.
Relaying denied: Your mail server/client is not properly configured.
No user at this address by that name: Self explanatory... invalid email address.

The return address on a mail isn't always accurate. For example I could set outlook to use Cianos@madeupaddress.ie as my return address, any mails I sent to people would then appear to come from Cianos@madeupaddress.ie but if people tried to reply to them they would get delivery failures. Of course there are other ways of tracking back an email via ip addresses in the case of something illegal having happened (just in case anyones getting any ideas :) ).

Thanks for the replies. So the most likely thing is that the sender of the mail in question has set up their mail account incorrectly? So that anyone who wants to reply to them is sending to an invalid address? So this then means that contacting them would be quite complicated/not worth the effort?

Well, the 'from' address should be the same, it's only when you click reply that the reply-to address activates, correct?

Well the 'from' address can also be very easily forged if for some reason the sender wanted to, but definately check to see if they're the same.
