Is it normal to have five instances of SVCHOST.EXE running?

    I thought three was normal.

It depends on what services you have running, you can see them in Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services. Different peoples setups will have different amounts depending on what windows services they're using and what extra software they've installed that runs as a service.
