eBay asked to outlaw charity ticket profiteers

Great news in my opinion - I hate when people grab a load of tickets for free gigs then sell them for massive profit online. I think e-bay should have been cutting down on it them selves. It appears that some one for Live 8 cottoned on to the fact that they'll start appearing online.
THE auction website eBay is holding talks with Live 8 organisers amid fears that tickets for the charity concerts to be held in London and Edinburgh could be sold through the internet at a profit.

Ooooh! Great idea! It'd be cool if it could count for all tickets but i suppose there's some good points to selling non-charity tickets, if ya want a gig ya can pay a lil more and get what ya want!

But for the Charity tickets it would be great if they banned it but what of other Auction sites?

But no-one is forcing people to buy these tickets...so maybe its immoral but it ain't wrong.

Perhaps the focus should be on ticket distribution methods which allow people to amass tickets for resale. In Cork for the City of Culture opening tickets were hard to get. They were free but seemed to end up amongst people who were sponsors or managed SuperValu shops or whatever. I'm sure some people would have paid a few bob if they could get a ticket...

Good News. Although, (and this wouldn't happen) but auctioning them on behalf of the charity woould be a good idea.

It was like the Livestrong bands. People selling them for a tenner.

How are they allowed to sell at more than face value anyway?

    Sounds like Communism to me....

Whats wrong with people selling them for a profit? People who want to go, but didn't win a ticket will be able to go, if they buy a ticket of ebay.
They're only making profit on them because people are willing to pay that price.

"They're only making profit on them because people are willing to pay that price."

But the artists are doing it for the charity, the tickets being free it to make it as big as the last one. Making a profit over charity is not right, some of the money should go towards it but it wont. For traditional gigs I dont care about above value selling as thats what people do but this is a free gig.

Glad to hear it. There are way to many ppl trying to make a profit on charity concerts.

The problem with this concert is that the only way to get tickets, is if you're lucky enough to win some. There are lots of people who really want to go, but might not win a ticket. If they're willing to pay for it, they should be allowed.

Would love to see above-face-value selling banned entirely. Weren't the government looking at outlawing touting recently?

What an excellent move by eBay
We wanted to let you know that we will be permitting the sale of LIVE 8 concert tickets on eBay.co.uk. As we do not wish to profit from this event, we have offered to make a donation to the LIVE 8 charity at least equivalent to the fees we collect from the sale of LIVE 8 tickets.

We are allowing the sale of tickets because we believe that people can make up their own minds about what they buy and sell. The reselling of charity concert tickets is not illegal under English law and eBay believes it is a fundamental right for someone to be able to sell something that is theirs whether they paid for it or won it in a competition.

    Regards,
    The eBay.co.uk Team
They're gonna pay Live 8 for the tickets they sell!

Selling ANY event tickets for over face value on boards.ie will result in a sitewide ban (so, for one thing, you can't read PMs).

This one took me almost 7 minutes (personal best was 5 mins):

you should be allowed to sell them for face value + postage costs/costs incurred while sending tickets but no more. selling tix for way above face value is ridiculus.

There was a big discussion at some point that ended with proof that selling a ticket for more than face value is illegal.
