    Hi,
A friend of mine recently finished her degree show and as it was going on the heads of college went around all exhibits and decided on the best piece of each show to take for the college.
Is this fair and more importantly is this legal?
I had a similar situation in college when we were told that all films made belonged to the college but as long as the films were 'suitable' they didn't mind you showing them around festivals but could if they wanted to demand all money you make off it.
I and my friend do not remember signing away all rights to what we produce but the colleges line is that it is produced on there property with their equipment.
Shurly as these courses are paid for (by grant usually) then you are in a sense hiring the equipment and their expertise?
    Any thoughts

I don't know if the same applies in that college, but I know that in UL all research belongs to the college

Very first day in LUDO we all had to sign agreements that any work we produced belonged to the college.

If your friend never signed any such form they'll automaticly hold all copywrites to it, being the author of the peice.

even if it was made where their equipment,
In copyright law who ever hold the rights own's it.

(sorta like car's. Even if you bought the car but its insured under somelses name they legaly own the car)

They have no legal right to display it with out the concent of the copyright holder.

Where is LUDO? Does the students union know about such practices? it hardly seems right does it? You pay for a course and materials and they get all rights to work YOU produce!!!?? I'm dubious as to the legality of even that.

LUDO is on Dame Street, a seperate part of the Senior College Ballyfermot campus. On the subject of a student union, as far as i know, there was and still isnt one of any description. I did CAM out in Bally'er (basically the predecessor to LUDO, 2 years learning MAX and doing life drawing and classical animation as well) which is still running, I remember we asked all the same sort of stuff and basically got the same info, whatever you do in the college with their equipment is theirs, they have sole rights, you can use all the stuff you did for portfolio pieces etc, but if you try to make money your **** could theoretically be theirs. Now im unsure of the legality of it all but thats what we were told...

Not all first years in college are over 18 so where does it leave them when the legal binding age for a contract is 18, or is it still 21??
