buying a digital camera

one thing to remember about sony cameras is that they use memory stick as opposed to more widely available and cheaper types of memory (compact flash, smartmedia, etc) Its been years since I actually bought a memory stick for my sony camcorder but if I remember correctly they're that little bit more expensive.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the bigger the screen the more juice it'll require. Getting the biggest screen possible is all well & good but not if it decreases the operating time of your camera and leaves you in the lurch/having to carry a spare.

Either way there are more manufacturers than Sony and Canon. If you haven't taken a much wider look already I'd say go do some more research. If you have already and have decided on a Sony, then ignore this. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go for the DSC-W5.

Hope you're not buying the camera over the Internet from that site. You'll get a better specified camera for less over the counter here. 6.2MP hp R717 for €299 anyone?

I just bought the W5... well W15, same camera just in black. It's excellent. Really good battery life, which makes up for the extra juice of the large screen I'd imagine. Comes with battery charger and 2 sets of rechargeable batteries, as well as a hard leather case.

32mb built in memory means you can start shooting straight off, and memory sticks have come down in price. I just picked up a 512mb Sandisk stick. Larger LCD is brilliant, and picture quality so far has been excellent also. I'd recommend it.

    I got mine from pixmania.com.

    oh i will

my dad has a sony camera too, so the reason im going with sony is because i can just pop it in to my dads camera too. also we have a sony viao with a memory stick port.. (unfortunatly my hp laptop doent  )

i think im going to be buying it this weekend because of fathers day sales.. also .. one more question. i want to look at these on my laptop cause my downstairs computer is in constant use by my brother and sister but my problem is i have a USB 1.1 and the transfer is slow. but i also have a firewire card (thats not powered by the computer so it dosent charge my ipod whle im its pluged in .. un like USB which is powered) does anyone know any firewire sony memory card stick readers that would be able to work or will i just have to go with my slow usb 1?

im sure there are firewire multi card readers out there, I just cant think of any at the moment. Why not try looking for a memory stick PCMCIA reader? That'd probably be your best option.
