    This maybe a silly question but I'm new to all this. What does PAL stand for?

    PAL = Phase Alternate Line.

    A European Analogue Colour TV system based on and improvement of the USA "NTSC" (National Telecommunications Systems Committe). NTSC is also the name of the USA 525line Mono TV system.

    PAL normally uses the CCIR 625 line system.

    Though we talk of DVDs or Digital Broadcasting being "PAL" or "NTSC", they really are not, the "PAL" or "NTSC" in this case means 576 line and PAL resolution derived colour at 25 FPS (50Hz interlace), or 480 line and NTSC derived color and 30 fps (60Hz interlace).

    On www.lyngsat.com etc "PAL", "SECAM" or "NTSC" means analog, wheras MPEG2, MPEG4, DVB or "422" means digital.

    Analog Satelllite uses 20MHz ish FM deviation and up to 9 FM audio subcarriers.

    Digital Satellite uses "DVB" standard which is kind of one way IP "internet data" allowing many different serial streams even on a transponder with only one channel. With DVB, the video, audio, teletext, epg, now&next, subtitles, 5.1 digital audio are all separate serial digital streams.

    On analog the teletext is in blank lines at the top of the picture, mono audio is on a separate FM subcarrier and Nicam (not used on satellite) is on a separate QPSK carrier. The PAL, SECAM or NTSC colour information overlaps the mono signal as UV signal (Mono - Blue and Mono - Red). This is why with analog (or composite video from decoder to TV) fine detail has crawling colour and very solid colour may have a crawly pattern.

    SECAM is a later inferior system to PAL used in France, Russia and some Arab countries. It has a about 6 varients. Studio work is in PAL and converted to SECAM for analog transmission.

    There is no DVD / DVB equivalent of SECAM like there is for NTSC and PAL.

    D2MAC is a hybrid system using digital colour and audio on a mono analog picture. It used too much bandwidth.

    The Japs had an Analog HDTV system, but it is now abandoned and all HDTV is digital. Unlike ordinary Digital TV, it is not "PAL" or "NTSC" related at all, so can't be displayed on a regular NTSC or PAL TV.

    No, TVN requires either an analogue or combined analogue/digital receiver. The Edison is digital only.

    It shouldn't be too difficult to get your hands on an analogue satellite receiver. Lidl sold them up until a year or two ago. Ebay may be a good spot to try.
