    Maybe an animation? Flash? 3d?
or a live action short film?
Sign up here and give a bit of info about what you can do and well see what we can get together.
While your at it why not pitch an idea and we can all vote on whice one(s) we will go ahead with.

My area of expertise is graphic design and tv and film production.

Does a 3d/Arty movie sound good to everyone? Say 15 mins of pure show boating with a classy storyline?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 972 ✭✭✭havok*

    eek!
Gb u do know that 15 mins is about 22,500 frames of anmimation.
    /me runs away screaming biggrin.gif
defo be on for doing a 3d project but mabye abit shorter? say 4 or 5 mins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭Figment

I think 4/5 mins is more that enough.
    To start with anyway. smile.gif

Theres loads of us - Plus it means we dont' have to cram stuff into a shorter time length if it makes sense - like a slow scene of some guy smoking a cigarette. 3/4 mins is probably sensible though smile.gif

like a slow scene of some guy smoking a cigarette

Oh, maybe a film noir style of thing, loads of atmosphere, shadows and not having to draw details. smile.gif
/me regrets not having drawn in years

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 972 ✭✭✭havok*

    Yer,
I'm think'in if we had a dark "noir" style as Figgy has said but make it emotionly powerful, The music track(s) whould play a HUGE roll in achiving this. More of a nightmare-ish feel to it like, whith some slightly disterbing imagery to give it some impact.

Depends on your fps ? Btw, with Flash you can set it so it plays in time to the modem, so to the end user it looks invisible.

oh yea, I have Flash, TruSpace experience but that doesn't equate to actually being able to do anything nice out of it. smile.gif

Ive studied it and directed and wrote a few short films. To be honest i dont rate myself as much of writer, i usually came up with a broad script and passed it on to one of the team to clean it up and write the character interaction better.

What does anyone think of a tense bank robbery? Ive always wanted to do one of those....
...and i suppose filming one will do for now smile.gif

For the filmnoir look we could do it at night(safe cracking and sneeking around the security)

or for the sureal(which im leaning towards) make the bank robbers an elete band of forest squirrels? yes squirrils Ive always felt the squirrils in the building society advert were hard done by with just being given nuts so there is instant motivation for ya.

    Ill get my coat...

Hmmmmm this might be a bit off the ball, but what if we mixed 3d with film with classical anamation?
Once the style matches it should sit together ok.
    Veiws?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 897 ✭✭✭Greenbean

Isn't it very difficult to make 3d look that way - I know people use those Flat shaders, which render 3d scenes with thick edges and no shading to look like animation but you can always usually tell the difference. Photoshop has some nifty paint-like filters too - looks like oil paintings; which the video could be run through. My opinion is whatever we do we shouldn't be apologetic for it's style not being close enough to another, rather we should choose something thats valid in its own right. So if its done in two styles then rather than trying to make one look like another they should just make sense combined.

So anyone any ideas for a story?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 897 ✭✭✭Greenbean

How about we choose a theme/setting/genre.

    Heres a few ideas:
Space War - could take this from pure 3d gimpyness into the stylish DARK atmosphere - Think of a moon turing into a scary head through the trees etc.

Barbarian Medevil Fight - no new ideas

Crazy Techno Mix - little abstract robots break dancing - see through deserts with tunnels underneath, any mad break neck stuff that spews out of your mind.

Well I'd definetly be up for helping out with any 3d/special FX/compositing work that needed to be done. Cant help you with the stories. Have a few Im doing already but their neraly finished. But does anybody have access to a digital (cos its easier) camcorder and firewire interface for the digitising of footage? (or similar). I get a loan of such a setup every now and then but can never get it for longer than half a day.

Also whos gonna do the acting? smile.gif I think a realibased storyline would be alot easier BTW. Talking from experience compositing and integrating FX is far easier on real sets than virtual sets (hardest lesson ever had to learn - "I am not a whole team of ILM animators..."). Cliched things like Trexs roaming around phoenix park are fun.... Course my story was a bit thin on the ground for that one smile.gif

Anywayz I'd be up for doing something as a part time bit 'o fun. I work with Lightwave, Photoshop, Realviz MatchMover, Premiere, ElasticReality, Rhino, Messiah and LifeForms amongst others if any of that will come in handy smile.gif

i know nothing about any of this, but ive always been absolutely fasinated with the whole intro thing.
if you look over the games youve played what intros impressed you?
quake 2 coz its real big f*ck off space craft alla aliens/red dwarf/star wars passing by.
dungeon keeper2 coz its just class. little fight scene. bit of humour and you know who is gonna come out on top smile.gif
either of the age of empire games. aoe 1 was perticularly impressive with the whole time thing and the rampageing armies clashing.

ok, i guess im into the big impressive thing. but if something is happening on screen that you watch and just go wow, then you are on a winner.
so just an idea, remember what intros you liked smile.gif rob the idea smile.gif do it better.

I love the stuff on www.ani-fest.com
Especially the Seesaw one (black and white and really really well "shot"...)

I love to write scripts altho I have no training in it. If someone give me a general area to try, I'll give it a shot.

    Tom.

ps: Figgy I noticed the subject line!!! tongue.gif

How much of this would be video? I have to admit it never covered my mind. Its always very hard to do good quality vid. Thinking it would be more like a cartoon process; whatever works ofcourse. Back to themes:

Killer robots on a massive scale, eg manga style erruptions out of the ground, ever bigger robots arriving on the scene absolutely dwarfing the previous ones - weird effects - disturbing blood from the robots etc. Then maybe a delving into the inside of the robots and finding simple defensless organisms inside or something.

Think of more when I can.

How about this sketch where a guy is beggin on the street and he asks a guy for money, the guy conceeds being surprised an not knowing what to do. He goes into a shop - 2 minutes later he meets the same guy on his way back and the guy asks him money again - he ignores him this time. After he passes him the beggar curses at him and calls him a stuck up ****er. (end effect: making people who watch the sketch angry at the beggar; and then hopefully question themselves on how they let a directed piece of video bias their opinion. Needs to really make the person watching the video feel like the person in it and get angry with them).

Old theme - How about a medevil street scene; something along the lines of those Raymond E Feist books, David Eddings etc and do a pulp fiction style look at moments in the daily lives of people there. We watch a guy selling fish, a woman turns up her nose and turns around quickly bumping into a small guy running quickly. The camera pans over from whence (that a word?) he came - some guy is shaking his fist and yelling about stolen apples. A cart goes buy in the distance - the camera pans to the cart and without stopping at it focuses in on the distance - the local temple; an beggar is seated on the steps - locals walk buy turning their noses up in the same style as with the fish .. etc etc...

I dont know anything about animation, but if it comes to a story Id be willing to write a scene for ye, to be taken or left as ye see fit.

It strikes me, that you guys want to show off some graphics, so you just need to be directed.
Taking inspiration from the mention of Feist and Eddings, how about something like a magical battle between two sorcerors? A quick prelude explaining the battle, followed be a chance for you guys to do some really kewl graphics (seeing as magic wouldnt really put any limits on you, you could be pretty imaginative with it).

Ill think about it for a while. If you guys are serious about doing this then, like I said, Id be more than willing to help out with a scene IF I can. Im only just geting into writing short stories (see literature board for one) so this would be an opportunity for me to test myself also smile.gif

I have a good piece that would allow us to mix various styles (its vaguely cyberpunk).

It is a short story which I'll post here soon. You can judge for yerselves...

    DeV.

Ive been thinking of a story for a long time now. I havnt really got the plot down yet but i have a good grasp of the characters which ill post soon.

Basic Pitch: A fairytale in Dublin

Premise: A guy discovers a hidden side to the normal facade of the Dublin streets and finds the Fairies/ lepricans and ogres of lore to be more real than he ever imagined.

Fairies: Leaders of an underground(literaly) operation
    Lepricans: The money men
Ogres: The heavies (run the bouncer operation in the city)
They use the homeless kids on the street as runners.

Bad guy is a nerdy accountant who is possesed so you see this geeky guy trying to invoke fear though he has great power and a deep voice etc.

    Misc. characters:
Maggy: A woman with a view of the future and a hatred of the world. She has a perverse, dry sense of humour and uses her power to see people get hurt!

There is a Jay and silent Bob type of pair who hang around the streets.

Visually: Rough and gritty getting darker as the story unfolds.

Purpose:to get people to see a new side to the everyday streets around them.

Ive been reading a lot of sandman lately so im sure you can see where this is coming from. Ill post the rest soon.

So does anyone have any more ideas for it story wise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,747 ✭✭✭Figment

Well i have a project almost ready to start.
Everyone was coming up with their own ideas of what direction to follow and so ive been working out a format and presentation to appeal to everyone, and i think i have it.
    The pitch is:
Old guy in armchair telling story which will bookend the assortment of stories we come up with.
Character: He is a lovable grandfater type but think of the 'very very drunk' guy from the fast show, with a hint of the paedophile guy from the wurthers original advert. He has a sick sense of humour that stems from a mispent youth in the sadomasochism scene of dublin 4.
His stories can be about anything that you think he might tell and are full of double untondres(or however you spell that)
    What i would like:
Sound guy: to record and mix sound effects
    Actor voice for old guy
I would like to do the bookends in 3d with a small bit of live action when needed, so i need we need a 3d wizard smile.gif
    Character sketches
    a name for the project
    credits
SHORT stories: about 3 min or less
Id like to do the editing myself

The story being told can be an any medium but i think it should keep within the aspect ratio of a computer/tv screen 3/4

i have the first story which is very simple and i think will probably be done in flash. Ill post it here fully later. Its him remembering a guy from his youth who had the strangest walk(true-ish story by the way), he didnt walk so much as lean his body forward and let his legs catch up with it before he fell over. as you can imagine this caused a few problems when braking was needed and indeed it became his undooing on charliesnoggin hill when his forward velocity and downward velocity combined to create the first supersonic man. It also created an interesting mural on old mrs gilliloolys front wall that was situated on the base of said hill.

bit of a newbie to this site so you probably aren't going to even read this. rolleyes.gif but i just came on you topic and

concerning greenbags idea for a robot film, i've done a little world in VRML in college that has a robot(atomic robot man to be precise) in a snowdome with the twin peaks music playing.

it might make a nice intro to the robots
at a more peacefull time in their life,

i reckon any combination of clips be they graphics, film.. anything, once there is a meaning and a excellent soundtrack(trigger happy tv as an example) it'll be a success..

Glad I started that thread now wink.gif

Great idea Kento... I'd love to see that done... t'would indeed be deadly... the (computer) Animated Adventures of Princess Breasts in the Kingdom of Confusion ... !

    Here's that starting point: http://www.boards.ie/bulletin/Forum13/HTML/000259.html

Personally, I'd prefer if it didn't stray too far from the original 'medieval' theme (i.e.: Pokemon etc. is a bit of a nono wink.gif) so maybe a bit of editorial work is required, for which, I am (naturally) available.

If yer still thinking about doing this, take a look at Paladins second post in this fine story, it would suit the requirements well methinks.
