Right...i'm 20. spending 2 months in new york...and the drinking age is 21...now drinking is not my prime concern, but when i wasnt allowed into a punk rock kareoke night because of my age...i became aware that i have no idea what i am to do for nightlife. I mean if i am not even allowed into the clubs where do i go for a good time?

p.s Anyone know a good place to get a pirate hat in new york...or at least one of those old fashioned naval traingle hats

Not entirely legal, but this is what we did on the J1 when we were in the same situation. We were just a few months under 21...

Photocopy your passport a few times. Cut digits etc from one copy and paste them onto another copy to make it look like your birthday is later and that you are over 21.

Ensure to change the row of digits at the bottom as well as your birthday is in that section as well if you look hard enough.

Photocopy the page with the changes and the outcome is perfect...

Now the line is.. "I travel for business and I can't afford to lose my passport so here is a photocopy"

Worked every time. Now that was just pre-september 11, so i dont know how passport 'manipulation' is treated in the states these days.
Dont blame me if you end up in prison in guantanemo bay ;)

I did NY when I was 20 as well. I found that Manhattan was pretty tough to get by the bouncers unless you had a valid passport or drivers licence. The irish bars around woodside queens and woodlawn in the bronx are pretty easy to get a drink but they are full of irish people. It's la bit ike going into a sausage factory in some town like longford or mullingar.

I've been back to NY since I turned 21 and I have to say Manhattan is the business, the irish charm works a treat there and the standard of women is much higher.
