As happy as you probably are about this new system you built, its not reflected in the price I regret to say

Its not too bad, apart from the Geforce 3 ti - thats not going to play any new games at all :(

Eh, i don't mind. Its better than my last comp. I wanted to build a comp rather than Dell it, good experiance.

Well, good for you, at least you have a sense of acheivement! But - haven't you defeated the purpose by making a pc that won't run any new games...?

Did he say he wanted to run games on his pc?

If not, then why would one bother getting 512ram or 2.4 ghz?

If its a simple general pc for work or music, I have a p3 700mhz that does that job more then adequate... ;)

Pecular choice of hardware for it, but eh...whatever keeps you happy, I remember one time my friend got 50+ ancient computers for free, old company ones, we spent an entire weeked making just ONE good one (compared to the others) each from all the parts. It took so damn long sorting through everything, finding proper cards, motherboards, etc, my fingers were almost bleeding from so much work

    I ended up with a 300mhz, 32ram, 52xcd, 12gb hd, 8mb graphics.

It was a piece of shít, but I was just so proud :)

As the lads said, you probably paid a little too much (not by much mind).

But it's the guts of a workhorse machine.

512 MB is what would regard as the optimum amount in a 2000/XP machine if you're on a budget. 2.4GHz is fine for pretty much everything, including new games. Even the graphics card WILL play all the new games at 800x600 minimum. I'd find an 80GB hard drive a bit limiting but it depends on how much multimedia you have and how much video editing you're doing.

Jaysus give the guy a break....he did damn well building that lot for less than most lads would take a chance on....Nice build there mp3guy...I would love to have gotten those parts myself for that money.

U could be around forever looking for a better deal.

Cool. Glad it worked out for ya.

But to be honest you really can build better for the money.

People prolly seem like they are jumping down your throat but they mean well.

The real skill in building a pc is not the putting it together.

It's in the part selection: getting the best bang for your buck with a good upgrade path as possible and of course trouble shooting when it won't work :-)

A little research could have gotten you a better speced machine.

You really should have had a look at getting a socket 754 mobo with a semperon cpu in amd and you could have squeezed in a modern mainstream card in that would be much better than the gf3.

At least with 754 you could have upgraded to a very fast amd64 in the future.

Hind sight is always 20/20 of course! :-)

Congratulations on a sucessful build and better luck next time.

512 MB RAM for Windows XP, KDE or Gnome is not a huge amount of RAM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Yea XP it's self uses about 200 Megs, stick video editing or games and a few background apps onto that and you're up to 512. I'm thinking of getting a second gig in my box ...

Yeah, my last comp had 256MB ram, and multitasking was a no no. I'm happy with this build, runs FarCry at 1024x768 w/ Quincunx AA at a very playable 30 fps.

Sure thats just a base amount of ram nowadays ive got 1.5 gig of ram and Athlon 64bit 3400+ and im not happy with the performance to be honest so im gonna get a couple of Western Digital raptors in raid and see if that makes any difference and i dont even play games its just for general use, web, dvd burning and a little video encoding,

Yeah, hes right - if you find 1.5 gig ram insufficent for general usage then you got one fucked up pc :(

I only have 1gig, plays any game, and any amount of software fine with no slowdown that id notice...
