Hey Doctor J is it worth switching to Sabian's? cause Music Maker in Dublin have the largest range of cymbals probably in thw whole of Ireland but they only stock Sabian. Would you say they're better than Zildjian's? I was even thinking of gettin some Paiste cymbals as an upgrade, they look deadly. You're pearl 80's set is really nice, where did u take that pic by the way, recording studio?

An old picture but not too much has changed.
I've a few more splash's and some other stuff too!

Thanks. To be honest, I've never played anything but Sabians so I can't really say. I like them a lot, they sound fine to me and I've never broken one (the ride is about 10 years old now and the rest at least 5 years) so if I ever buy another cymbal it'll probably be Sabian again.

The pic is actually a school hall in Raheny where we did some recording with Dabhoys. Between the two of us we have enough to do mobile recording and the hall sounds really nice acoustically (and it's free) ;)

I need new cymbals and I need more, but moneys the problem. I've been playing a year and a bit now, I wanna get something new instead of my camber. I'm looking to get a 142 hi hat. 16" crash, 8" splash and a 20" ride and see how that goes.

any idea on how much and of course stands too..

Well, i have had a few sabians- hi hats,2X16" AAX crash's and a 19" crash ride. In comparison, i find them to be brighter than Zildjians, but i like the zildjians more. Inb my opinion i prefer the Zilds, better quality cymbals with a good name, there isnt exactly a 'cheap' zildjian in comparison to some of the cheaper sabians. Anyway, the best way to find out is to go to the sound bytes of cymbals on each of their websites and test the sounds out for yourself...

Ebay, buy and sell and ofcourse the boards very own musical instruments for sale section are your best bets. But, if these are your next set of cymbals, dont go cheap again, even if it means just getting some quality hi hats or a quality crash, its worth it in the long run.

I like them they have had mixed reviews but if bonham uses them who am i to complain. I think they sound great sepcially with the coated skins :) .
The piccolo is a beaut imo, really good sound off it and the rimshots would bite your eardrums right out!

Hm.. and the cymbals, well mixed by necessity not choice but they seem ok (for the moment). The B8 is a very quiet crash and then the paiste alpha is a demon so they contrast. I really like the zbt's, they just have a good crisp sound off em and jazz nicely. and as for the K custom dark ride...... words can't describe :D .

and about you gettin a ludwig... I dunno why you would ever want to cheat on such a beautiful kit as yours. but yeah ludwigs are nice. Must try a sonor sometime I've heard nothing but good things.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭Baggio

    Good stuff lads,
..yeahh thanx for the kind words cousin, am well pleased with the Sonor,,,in studio last night it really sounded meaty,,took 10 mins between songs, when the lads were looking at stuff,,,just to smack each tom and enjoy the resonance,,,was well pleased by them all. Sonor like all the main drum makers make good stuff,,no doubt. I think I saw those Dixon's on music 123 and samash for pretty cheap money under their "top sellers" banners, which is a good sign of top notch value for money,,,sounds interesting :D
Pearl66...umm I'd advise ya to buy goood quality cymbals, and since its hard to test cymbals in a shop here , i'd advise you to at least run thru the sound samples with volume well up on yer pc,,,for all sabian, zildjian, meinl and paiste cymbals on their sites and hear and see what ya think...
If ya wanna try a few in person ,,,maybe do sabians in Music maker, do zildjians in the yamaha place on George's street *i think* , and maybe youl see a paiste or meinl amongst em all too...I tried the site sound samples and sampled all my cymbals on the zildjian site before buying...it was a bit of a risk to do..coz some folks seem to think the sounds are not consistant with what the real time hearing is etc, but thankfully they all turned out exactly what i wanted...apart from my ping ride and dark k china, coz i had had both those before and knew what to expect there.
...Then id calmly order what ya need from the states,,,even paying duty youll save at least a third of the price compared with here and maybe more¬!!...for wuhan china's? - buy of "ufsports" guy on ebay...dead on , straight dealer, dirt cheap for the best sounding china's on the market,,,ridiculously cheap prices,,but welll worth going after :

ok enough from ol' loud mouth here :)...ciao' amigos...Baggio...

    Kit 1: Mid 80's Pearl Pro Woodfiberglass, 24, 13, 14, 18FL
    Kit 2: Mid 90's Pearl BLX in Sequoia red, 24, 10, 11, 12, 14
    Kit 3: Ludgwig Maple Superclassic Cherry, 22, 10, 11, 12, 14
Kit 4: Mid 90's Yahama DTX Electronic - mainly for practice, but gigging more with it now.

Snares: Early 70's Ludwig Metal 502, 2004 Black Beauty (very very very loud!), both 5 1/4

    Cymbals :
Paiste 3000 Series 15 hats, 18 China, and 20 Ride
    Zildjian 14 K hats, Custom A 19 Crash, A 17 Crash, 12 K Splash, 20 Dark K Ride
Sabian: 16 HH, 16 AA Crashes

Pedal: mid 80's Premier 747 (Legendardy and arguably the best pedal every made!)

I prefare Paiste in a studio or closely mic'ed situation, I find their sound overall to be better and tighter than Zildjian/Sabian, but they don't project as well. Zildjians are great, but they always seem to sound better out front than when you are playing then. Sabians are great all rounders. Sabian was originally set up by one of the Zildjian brothers, but was legally forbidden to mention the Zildjian name for the first 10 years of Sabian.

In general, I think it's hard to beat vintage gear, there's so much good stuff on Ebay and it's really cheap compared to the rip off prices and limited range of shops in Ireland. I bought all my Zildjians on the net for a fraction of the price that I'd get them here, plus they arrived in the original Zildjian bags and weren't the usual demo models that shops here always fob people off with.

I've been using the electronic kit more and more now, probably down to just pure laziness! I had one of the first Simmons kits in Ireland in 1984 (SDS9), it looked cool but put me off electronics for years as it sounded like sh*te.

I tried the new Roland V-Drums in a shop in Denmark St. in London last year and they were freakin incredible, especially the feel of the cymbals. Incredible price too - priced it at over €5,500, although they had a demo set (i.e. second-hand!) on offer for €4,800. They are on my letter to Santy this year.

Wohh!!! u serious? that means that sabian are like another branch of Zildjian jus different sounds and they still get all the money. Odd

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,006 ✭✭✭Baggio

    Dublin writer,
,,thats quite correct, the brother i think who started Sabian was Armand Zildjian,,,they are branches of the same family company in fact,,,i GUESS thats one reason why Neil Peart didnt mind changing to Sabian, as he was very loyal to Zildjian overall for 30 years...so I guess he had not too many gulity feelings over it etc because of that fact.

still Id much prefer Zildjians to Sabians..but thats just me :0

Fookin' hell...octobans! Havn't seen those since Stuart Copleland/Simon Phillips.

I always wanted to use octobans, but they're a bit impractical space and transport wise. Do Tama still make them or did you get those second hand?

I think Peart was originally a Tama/Paiste endorsee until about 1984. I'm very dubious about drummer endorsements, not so much with Peart, but other drummers because of the money involved in such deals.

For example, Billy Cobham seems to endorse different drum & cymbal manufacturers on a yearly basis. The last I saw he was playing Mapex & Meinl.

Mel Gaynor of Simple minds endorsed Premier/Tama/Pearl all within an 18-month period back in the late 80's.

    Dublin writer,
...some good points there about endorsements etc. Peart was actually never a paiste man, he was always a Zildjian man untill his sabian paragon line A year or two ago .
He used TAMA from 1980 till 1987, had SLINGERLAND drums from 74 to 79,
had LUDWIG from 87 to 95 and finally has DW from then till now.
I personally think his best recorded drum sound was 87/88 with the Ludwigs on Hold Your Fire, but his best overall sound to me were his TAMA'S , I find DW all resonance and not enough attack,,,in terms of HIS drum sound for last few years.DW - great drums no doubt, but much rather his Ludwigs or Tama's
