Anyone see the Doc on discovery? It was on yesterday but im sure its been on before too. And will be again.

anyway apparently people from all over the world go to Alaska with little or no experience to try and get a job on a crab fishing boat. For 5 (YES FIVE!!) days work they can earn anywhere between $50K - $150K!!! Can you believe that!!! Of course its hard work and VERY dangerous. You need to risk losing limbs.

One guy lost most of his fingers, the doctors reconstructed as best they could. Looks like a big swolen hand except its missinga finger.. the freak keeps the black rotten thing around his neck as a memento :D

So Anyone who wants loadsa money without breaking any laws.. off you go!!

    jaysus thats some cash....

    google for the crabs tho,
theyre bigger than the people cathcing them.

aparently they only harverst them once per year,
last year 250 boats took 14million lb's of crabs in 4 days,
so a fair bit of work involved id think

Oh yes there is loads of work and like i said its dangerous.. In the doc one of the boats almost sank and another was tipping over etc. And its Alaska.. if you go overboard without a protective suit you will be dead in minutes from the cold water.

Yea been watchin a few of them.
I think you need to rethink the money - that money is not correct,
it goes by how much the ship makes, lads with no experience or jjust 1 years experace get from 8-20k the captains and deck captain get around 20-40k.
a lot of people on them are family businesses

think u need to check that again and make sure it aint drug smuggling from columbia.

No way could it be that simple, every fool would be doing it otherwise..

Eh stones... every fool is doing it :D Except the people that dont know or its too much hassle to do. Most places are filled up ahead of time but people still go there hoping to get on a boat.

As has been said they probably will not get near that much but they will get thousands of dollars for 5 days work.

Oh any idea how much a king crab costs??? Find out and you might see why 5 days catching thousands of them is worth the money.

seen the programs, working for five days ok, working 20hrs a day and very little sleep not very good anyone, not used to high seas will probaly puic all over the place. anyway whats wrong with working on a crab or lobster boat in this country it payes very well also the work is still quite hard hauling a thousand pots a day starting at 6 in the morning and finishing up at 7 or 8 at night and thats if all goes well. Been on a lobster, crab potter not as easy as you would think so working on the alaskan boats would be alot worse.

That programme isn't new it was on Discovery two years ago, titled "the worlds most dangerous job" anyway whatever about money its certainly dangerous but for some people 50k is worth that. I think that is not enogh to risk ones life for, then again i have the luxury of saying that from a top my cash mountain !!

An incredible salary only interests me so far as that the job itself is one that puts you in no danger

I wouldnt price my life, or even my hands/fingers for that matter

Im off.... 5 days work a year, not bad, spend the rest surfing....

    $50K?

Right, you get it, use the rest of the year to spend it, then what? You can't go back to this job without your fingers/limbs, so you spend the rest of your life in normal jobs and/or living on disability benefits.

Doesn't sound worth it to me. That's the problem with these kinds of jobs - car sales in Iraq is another. People are so blinded by the big numbers that they fail to see the big picture. You work these jobs short term, make enough to let you live in leisure for what, 5 years at most, and then you're left back where you were, no employer wanting to touch you becuase you've been doing nothing for the last few years.

you're not going to get €50k for a few days work, so you might as well forget about it.

if you're still interested in a well paid job for some exceedingly demading work then take a look here: http://www.alaskajobfinder.com/

the days of the king crab 'boom' industry are well and truly over, but there's still decnet money to be had if you're brave enough.

be warned though, on year 42 people were killed during one season. it's not dublin bay, it's the baring sea and it's a killer. you'll need your sea legs to be sturdy if you're even thinking about it.
