Well first question, do you know anything about network cables?
If you do you need a cross over cable and 2 network cards or on board network ports on each machine ulternatively you could use a hub and 2 sets of RJ-45 network cables. What windoz?

Xp service pack 2. I think my laptop has a network card, but my pc itself doesn't actually as it turns out.

Tell me more about this hub....

On board network ports? Shoulf a new 3.4ghz machine and an old 700mhz laptop designed for work possess such wonders, generally speaking?

both pcs should have net word cards [nics]
if not they gor for about5 euro in the for sale section.

get a crossover cable, lad in galway on the for sale section does them cheap.
    link two pcs this way.
assign each pc an ip address in the same subnet, 192.168.1.5 and 192.168.1.6 would be an example.

    open game on both programs,
set one as the server, the faster one usually, open the network option on the non-server game, type in the oyther pcs ip address and away you go.

well i think your cheapest and best bet is the cable solution, if your desktop has wireless it must have a network cable port, it looks like a larger phone cable port, Basicly the easyest way is a cross-over cable which is one cable that allows two computers to be networked with each other, i don't think a standard RJ-45 cable will work, all you gotta do is put the cable in the laptop and the computer and windows xp should give you a little wizard on what to do. If all else fails have a look at this HowStuffWorks.Com : Guide to Networking

another cheap option would be to try a RS232 cable also called a null modem cable. should be available in most computer stores.
if you search for null modem you'll find tons of info on it :)
