Everton miss out on Euro seeding

Everton now know that they face a tough task to qualify for the lucrative Champions League group stages after it has emerged that they will not be seeded for the third qualifying draw in Nyon, Switzerland on July 29.

The Merseysiders, back in Europe for the first time in 10 years, feared this would be the case and they are now awaiting UEFA confirmation of the fact.

But with all Europe's leagues now completed, Everton know they do not have a large enough coefficient to take a seeded place, and they would find themselves even below Millwall, who would have a better ranking because they were in the UEFA Cup last season.

Everton face the prospect of being paired with Inter Milan, Sporting Lisbon, Ajax and Monaco and there is also the possibility of a 'Battle of Britain' if they are pulled out of the hat with Scottish seeds Rangers or Celtic, if the latter get through their second qualifying round.

Formal clarification is still yet to arrive from UEFA but Everton head of communications, Ian Ross, said: "As we have not been involved in Europe for the past five seasons we hold no UEFA team ranking and therefore take the England ranking into the Champions League for seeding purposes."

"The current seeding list is worked out on the basis that teams such as Anderlecht, Locomotive Moscow, Dinamo Kiev and Celtic all progress through the second qualifying round.

"But even if that did not prove to be the case the ranking for Everton is still too low to give us a seeded place, which is an extremely unusual situation for an English team to be in."

Everton cannot be drawn against Manchester United, also in the third qualifier, because although the Old Trafford club are seeded they cannot face a team from their own country.

Celtic v Shelbourne for me :) (assuming Shelbourne get through)

Good to see Celtic in Pot 2 should they get into the group stages

No grounds for complaint from Everton when 4th place in the EPL gets you into the last qualifying round for a team that has not played European football for 10 years!

I guess we all knew it was a wasted place. So UEFA Cup it is then.

Shels - Glentoran in the 1st qual round maybe. Then Shels - Celtic in the 2nd round. Would be a nice run, without having to go to the back arse of nowhere.

United still the highest English coefficient in the CL, roffle :)

    Only have to avoid Betis/Udinese/Everton
Although I'd obviously be confident of beating those teams, I'd rather not get them.

You mean "highest coefficient of the teams in the Qualifying Rounds of the CL", right?

Harsh on Everton, gonna be tough no matter who they get drawn against.

I don't think they can be drawn against everton

MU cannot be drawn against Everton

No, they are the highest ranked English team in the competition because Liverpool arent there.

A point was made that Utd are the top seeded english team , to which Pie came back with something anlong the lines of "surely you mean the highest rated team in the qualifiers". With me so far? Now I was simply pointing out that seeing as Liverpool are not in the competition, Utd are the highest seeded english team in the whole competition and not just in the qualifiers. If you could please point ou the part where I said Liverpool should be there, I'd appreciate it.

I just assumed I would'nt have to spoon feed it that much.

Well Ill re-phrase so, Chelsea and Arsenal are seeded higher than United.

As regards that table, how can Chelsea be so low seeing as they have got to the semis for the last two years  Newcastle are even ahead of them.

Because in the pre Abramovich Chelsealand, European football was reserved for the early stages of the UEFA cup.

i think he means the fact they finished first and second they qualify automatically but united have to still qualify.

Once/if united qualify they will be in a higher pot then chelsea and Arsenal, and will be seeded higher.

No they just missed out. Pity for them as I suspect they'd go further then 'boro or Bolton.

I hope so I think Spurs are a nice side to watch and they signed some great young players.

Specially Tom Huddlestone. I rate him highly.

I think with him and Dawson they are sorted for centre backs in the future.

    Wish Liverpool had signed either.

But even in each of the last two years Newcastle got more points than Chelsea - which cannot possibly be right.

The table therefore must surely be wrong.

No, you get the same amount of points for a win in the Cl as you do for the UEFA cup. Newcastle 10W; 1D; 1L. Chelsea 6W; 2D, 4L.

It's going to be tough for Everton now. They could get lucky and draw one of the weaker teams like Slavia Praha, Rosenborg BK, Club Brugge or Panathinaikos but the chances are fairly slim. It would be interesting to see Celtic / Rangers -vs- Everton.

I wouldnt rule them out just yet. Everton had done amazing things just by getting there.

Would you bet hard money against them getting into the group stages?

I dont think they will but I wouldnt be confident enough to be cash money on the thing.

    Good luck Everton.
