Can you get into Safe Mode?

Press F8 during startup, and you should get the option to boot into Safe Mode

Try disconnecting everthing lik all you cd drives, floppy drive anything like that. Just leave your hard drive with the os on it connected to the power supply. Might be something to do with a failing power supply....

    tried man :-\

Have you tested the RAM sticks individualy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Irishpimpdude

don't suppose you have a spare CPU lying around so you could test that?

If it helps , and im sure it doesn't , my e-machine 820 went kaput a couple weeks ago , mainly cos they suck .. mother board blew after a few months with a nice sound card.

Its probably your bus or cache failing on the mobo.. e-machines usualy have a ****y 120 watt power supply

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Irishpimpdude

its a 250w power supply and no i dont have an extra cpu :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

Ah come on it's hardly the cpu. What would be the chance of that failing especially as it's a factory built pc. Can you try the ram in another machine? Say a friends or something just to eleminate that it's not faulty ram... If you can and find it's not faulty have you thought about reinstalling your os. Could be something gone wrong in there.
I would aslo recommond updating your anti virus and anti spyware and run the tests on them to make sure it's not a virus or spyware on your pc playing hell...

If you're virus and spyware stuff is up-to-date, it'd have to be the OS or mobo at this stage

AFTERTHOUGHT: You should download "Hijack this" and check out anything suspicious looking with http://www.what-process.com/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭galwaydude18

ya that's what I reckon myself but it could be also faulty ram... Ah the thougths of either the mobo or ram being faulty send chills down my spine...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Irishpimpdude

um there is no suspicious processes running and btw i dont think its the ram because i doubt the 2 sticks could be faulty.. one stick i got in the machine and the other i bought.

download spybot to get rid of any malware spyware, try safe mode see does it stll crash after 20minutes, you may be running too many process,s and you may not have enough memory.how much memory have u got, what os are you using.you should have 512meg for win xp .run virus check.and scandisk.

Well, if he formatted his HD and reinstalled, and that made no difference, it'd HAVE to be hardware. But its not a typical problem caused by hardware.

So i think he mustn't have formatted, he must have just reinstalled over the old version of windows.

    yes i have 512mb ddr pc 2100
    celeron 2.20

yeah i know its outdated and a crap computer im gonna build a new comp soon anyways hehehe i just bought a motherboard off komplett does anyone know if i would be allowed send it back it it didnt fix the problem???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

If you open it, then you can't send it back. If you don't open it you can.

If you open it and it doesn't sort the problem, then i'm afraid the only way to get money back on the mobo is to sell it as second hand.

try mem stick 1,take out 1 stick, use anti static precautions, earth yourself off water tap.if pc doesnt crash on 1 stick ,ie 256meg ram ,it means other stick is faulty.swap round sticks.they should be same speed and specification.take case off pc for hour, then see if it crashes,it cud be overheating, has cpu got fan on it.its easy to destroy memory sdrams if u dont take memory antistatic precautions.u shoud use anti static wristband, when handling chips or motherboards.

there is a programme for checkin ure ram the longer u leave it run the better i cant remember what its called (mem test or similer) i got a link here b4 for it

If you're worried about static, leave the PC plugged in (but flick off the power at the socket) and touch the case with both hands.

Then leave one hand touching the case (or some part of your arm) and take out the memory sticks. Also, never put electronics on TOP of an anti-static bag. They should only ever go inside the bag, what with static charge always residing on the outside of the container.

Download the cd iso for http://www.memtest86.com/ and run it on your RAM. If there's a problem with the RAM that will find it.

    memtest

Download it and make a bootdisk, and you will know by the end of the evening if you have bad ram.
